How to contribute to Thargoid war by evacing refugees (hopefully in exchange for engineering raw mats)

I'm back to Elite Dangerous after several years away, after having given up on tedious farming for engineering mats.

I've found a few HGEs to take care of manufactured materials, and my understanding is that evacing refugees is a good way to get raw mats. The only question is how do I get started? I have a type 9 with plenty of space, do I just fill it up with the highest capacity passenger bays possible and fly to Sol? Once in Sol, is refugee evacuation just a mission you pick up at the mission menu?

I don't have nearly a good enough ship to start shooting the Thargoids... yet.

They're just missions you can pickup at the mission board of any Sol orbital station. So far none of the stations are burning so autodock works 👍 You have a choice of loading up injured people in rescue pods in your cargo bay or picking up passengers for your cabins. Just watch out for the ones with very shady pasts - they could get you in trouble.

Welcome back commander 🫡

For evacuating refugees you'll need a fairly fast ship to get away from hyperdictions.
Just go to passenger missions and you will find plenty.
This is my current rescue Python: Nebucadnezar
It's not perfect, but it gets the job done.
The shield isn't of much use, but the electronic countermeasures are.

Wow, it looks like you need fully engineered (tier 5 thrusters etc) just to do this as well. I was hoping for something I could do with an unengineered ship to get engineering mats.

I don't have a ton of time to play games every week, so I'm NOT taking hours doing 30 jumps to go grind mats from a boring ground site.

Man, already starting to remember why I gave up on this game. Sad.

Nah, I simply use my jumpaconda. All it has is an excellent (SCO) FSD. Other than that I simply slapped some shield, shield boosters that I found in my garage, an ecm and several heatsinks on it, some standard A thrusters and off I go. Really random stuff that was catching dust except for the ECM and heat sinks. I keep my heat below 20% during interdiction with heat sinks, keep boosting, intercept the missile with the ecm, they get my shields down to around 30% and gone I am. Works very well!

Yet keep in mind, we are talking about Thargoids. It is not meant to be easy (yet in fact, it still can be if you know what to do).

T9 is a bit of a death trap on these jobs.
The only time mine was sent to the Rebuy screen was being hyperdicted early in the war.
There's a few Orca and Clipper builds around that do well but I do recommend speed as priority.

A simple orca will do fine. Mine has no shields, all economy cabins, and just a point defence to shoot down missiles. Has an Ecm and heat launcher too, but they are not necessary, as you just boost away at full speed when interdicted. I always get interdicted leaving the system, always escape with 100% hull. Can carry 96 passengers.

Financially it makes sense to add a business class cabin too, but... let the ruling class sweat it out..

I'm rescuing passengers in an unengineered Type-7. If it's possible in that, it's possible in anything. Electronic countermeasures, heat sinks and military armour are the key to deal the outbound hyperdictions.
