How-to diagonally thrusting with the X52 and SST

This is for the commanders that use the HOTAS X52 and are having the same Issue that I've had.
I talk about the abstinence of the moving diagonal with the thrusters in Elite Dangerous.

I know there is a method floating around, where you open the control panel of the stick (let it open), and are able to move diagonally with the thrusters.

The main issue that I have with this is that my whole button layout (SST profile), that I created in the Saitek Software is not working anymore with this workaround.

In PremiumBeta I was able to move my ship diagonally with the thrusters in combination with my profile, but with Beta 1.01 - 1.03 this is not working for me anymore.

So, I messed around a bit with the Saitek Smart Technology (SST) profile editor and I found a way to bring the diagonal thrusting back for me.

In the following steps, I will show you how to set this up in the SST Software!

1. you need to install the Saitek Smart Technology profile editor if you haven't already done that. ;-P

2. Left or Right click the small icon in the task bar to open a dialogue and choose from there "profile editor"
The Profile editor starts and here you can program your stick and throttle buttons.
Click on "Programming" on the top right to open the tab.

3. Now you can see your stick and throttle on the left side of the window.
In this example, we choose the "POV HAT 3 switch" on the throttle to do the thrust control for our ship.
Click the representation of the throttle (left) on POV Hat 3 or scroll down on the right side until you see "POV Hat 3 (grey background)"

4. Right click on the grey background of POV Hat 3 and a dialogue will open.
Here you choose "8 Way" and "Buttons".
POV Hat 3 Switch expands and will show you the 8 ways you can go with the POV Hat 3 switch + center posiiton, but we don't need that one.

5. In this step, we assign for the direction left, right, up and down a keystroke.
In this example I used: W = Up, A = Left, S = Down, D = Right (see picture)
Click into the appropriate cell and assign a Key of your keyboard to it. Important: you should avoid the keys of the number pad and the arrow keys (explanation in step 6)
Click now on "ok (green check)" on the right side of the cell.
Now you can enter a name for this button.

6. In this step we assign keys to the diagonals.
Right Click into one of the diagonal button cells.
A dialogue appears and choose "New Advanced Command" from the list.

7. The "Edit Action Command" window is opening
Here we use the middle cell of this window, the "Repeat" section.
Click into the middle cell and enter a keystroke combination.
In this example I chose the first diagonal, the upper right one.
The Keys that we have to PRESS and HOLD now are: "W and D"
Still holding the keys, you can now close the window with your mouse cursor on "OK".

Important: Both keys need to be pushed and to be held, otherwise you get two more commands for releasing the keys - we don't want that!

Notice: try to avoid the numpad keys and arrow keys, on my side I was not able to press and hold and click the OK button at the same time, the window doesn't want to close.

8. In this step, we left click on the same button cell, where we just created an advanced "repeat" command.
This opens up again the Edit Action Command window, with our created command in the middle section of the window.
we right in the cell and choose this time the bottom option of the dialogue "Quantize Time"

9. We want to execute both key presses at the same time, to do so we enter 0 and click on OK and close the Edit window with OK as well.
The previous steps you need to repeat for the other 3 diagonals.
When you're done, save the profile and you can close the SST software.

10. Left or Right click onto the small icon at the task-bar again (see step 2 picture) and choose the profile that you just saved (should be on the top of the dialogue) The icon changes it's colour to Black with a greenish square background. - That means your profile is now active.

11. Now you can fire up Elite Dangerous and go directly into the control options
Here we need to change the thruster controls for left, right, up and down to the keys we just used in the SST Software
(W, A, S, D)

That's it...start a single player mission and check out your thrusters.

I hope this helped some of you.

Cheers,

Taragashi

I use the 4 way hat on the X52 Pro throttle, just hold it in a corner and it does diagonal thrust.

I'd like to use the mouse nub as an axis for analog thrust control but ED doesn't see it as an axis even if I set it as one in the profiler.

4-Way, 8-Way Fallback, I tried all of those options and It just doesn't work anymore since Beta.

It worked in PremiumBeta with 4-way Fallback.

Reinstalling the OS and using fresh profiles for ED and SST and it's still not working for me anymore like it did before. Buttons seem to work just fine (Control Panel)

I have no clue what is going on.
