How to Enter Ice Rings?

I've seen pictures of explorers flying through ice rings, and they look stunning. However, since they're unminable, they don't get RES's, right?

Do I need to crash into the rings to enter them?

Thanks.

Basically. Though if you 'crash' at less than 1Mm, it's just a 'drop', not an 'emergency drop', so you take no damage, no overheat, no super-long FSD cooldown.

Just blast straight at them, then slow down and drop out of supercruise. Or, if you don't mind the repair bills, trust your computer to stop you before you make a little spot of plasma on the side of a chunk of ice.

If you want to do it gracefully, for what its worth, - fly toward the ring at a reasonable SC speed, then start slowing when you see the ring resolve into clouds. Get down to 30km/s as the ring resolves into tiny dots, then keep going a little further until you can see the 'clumps' of bitmapped bodies, then a bit further for good measure and hit your manual disengage before the auto cutoff triggers. You'll be ~30-40km from the ring and can fly in with your sublights in 2 or 3 minutes.

I prefer to switch off flight assist on the entry vector and turn to admire the planet while sliding straight down with drives at 0 in pristine silence...you'll also get a much smoother visual transition while doing it this way.

But yeah crashing into them is the most expedient method.

A controlled "crash" (supercruise speed below 1,000 km/s) is the best method, as others have said, it's like dropping out of supercruise normally, no damage to the ship. Faster than that does risk damage, though.
