For those of you using Blender 2.8 over 2.79 - you can export animations, but not using the guidelines for 2.79
Key differences;
1 - 2.8 has a different architecture for armature to mesh, so when rotating ready for export, you need to just ...
- select the armature
- rotate armature around 90deg on X
- don't apply the rotation!
- you should see that your mesh has moved as well, round, but has 0 rotation on the X axis
- your armature should show 90deg rotation on the x axis
- make sure all scale and locations are applied
This will then work in game as expected, however your model will need rotating in game by 90 deg (there's no avoiding this sadly at the moment)
