Newcomer / Intro How to find selenium?

I need selenium for engineering, but where to find it?

Unlike normally, this time using a material trader doesn't seem to be a very viable option because of the highway robbery extortion exchange rates. I could exchange 12 tin and 216 iron for 3 selenium, but I would like significantly more than that. (And those are the only two materials I have enough of for an exchange).

And selenium seems to be extraordinarily rare out there. I could mine-laser metallic meteorites all day long and not encounter a single piece. It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

There are brain trees that drop it if you find the right forest:

I usually pop to that one if I need to top up Selenium or Technetium i.e. HR 3230 3 A A, reasonably sized forest at 41.8858, 16.6268

If you are in Horizons, geo sites were good for me.

In Ody, I did find them mining but I have a feeling it was metal rich as opposed to metallic. I could be wrong... it may have been icy rings. My memory is sooo bad.

Surface, Metallic or Icy rings.

Not all rings contain all of the materials that are normally found there and sometimes the reverse is true, Arsenic is a classic example maybe 1 in 10 Icy rings contain it, It may have something to do with the materials available on the orbiting moons for that particular ringed planet.

When you scan non landable bodies with FSS (even gas giants) they have list of materials and %s.
I put coin on correlation between materials in rings and materials on list.

Perfect!

That turned out to be a bit of an adventure...

Then I managed to get my SRV completely stuck on a tree. No matter what I did, it wouldn't budge. It was completely stuck.

I couldn't do anything but to walk to my ship. I tried to see if I could perhaps nudge the SRV, but apparently there's no way to move it that way...

However, I then landed and tried to board the SRV and for some reason it just got itself unstuck from the tree. I don't know what exactly happened. Maybe because I walked far away and then came back, or somehow my ship affected it, but somehow it got unstuck and I could continue.

In the end, I got a pretty decent haul of selenium. Should be good for engineering quite many modules.

If you had a second SRV (a spare) you could have used that to nudge the stuck one. I have done that a couple of times.

Having a spare SRV when out doing stuff helps a lot.

That's why i have 2 srv's when i am out gathering stuff.
I also got myself stuck a few times.

Re-log usually fixes this, the SRV spawns in before the trees do. So unless you want to find an "immersive" solution, that's the go-to.
