How to gain Empire naval rank?

I just got back from BP and I'm tired of exploring for the moment. I am wanting to gain naval rank with the Empire so that I can buy a Cutter (gorgeous ship IMHO) and I am wondering how to do that? I have looked at some of the 'guides' and most of them talk about mid-range of rank and up or are out-dated. I prefer not to PvP as I am not good at it.

Anyone care to help a fellow Cmdr out and give advice or point me in the direction of a good guide that starts at the beginning of ranking?

Thanks!

The easiest thing is simply do missions for empire factions in the system of choice.

Donation missions and long range smuggling seem to have the highest effect, but are costly in the former and time-consuming in the latter case.
Try to have fun with missions for a few days and you'll see how it goes.

I was going to try that out in Quince, a friend told me it was a good place for missions, but I found out it was fetch missions. Considering how far out Quince is from everyone else, I figured I would move down to the bubble and try missions there.

Yeah, this whole long-range thingy doesn't work as well as it used to.
It's better somewhere populated. It's good to keep in one place though, because as you raise your local rep, you will receive better and better missions.

Have fun!

Pre 2.1 the fastest way to earn Empire rank was doing planetary assault mission
from systems like Cubeo and Shu Babassi . I don't know if these still exist or have been nerfed by 2.1
Do a search on " Empire rank" on the forum, there are several threads on the subject (pre 2.1)

Not sure if it works the same way in 2.1 compared with 2.0, but I should imagine this is still relevant, which is what I have done to reach the Clipper:

Take on missions in an Empire region and stick to that region if you can, rather than aimlessly wander all over the place. That way you gain rep with the local factions (now the NPC mission-givers) and can go back to them for more and better missions. Should help in the ranking, but we won't know until it has been thoroughly tested.

It will take a while to reach a Cutter, so you need to find missions that you enjoy. But taking on simple delivery, or fetch and carry should be good to get you rep with the mission-givers. Just remember to get back to them for more.

Try HIP 10716, Morgan Depot (you'll need Horizons). There are courier missions to one nearby systems. Get as many as you can (or want) via mode switching. HIP 10716 was known as the place for surface attack missions before 2.1.

Pre 2.1 the below was absolutely the most time efficient and fun. I tried all known methods. Not sure if mission stacking is possible now (eg via mode switching). If not, reaching Duke will take a LONG time. Also with this method you'll earn quite a tidy sum in the process. You will need a decent ship and a solid technique though - it's not completely trivial. Those Gliaths pack a punch!

P.S. HIP and Cubeo were not nearly as "generous" in terms of making relevant missions available on the bulletin board. On the plus side, the missions were MUCH easier.

I will concur with the stacking of courier missions. I went from Marquis 1% to Duke in a grand total of seven hours play time in HIP10716 doing courier work. I would recommend using something like an Imperial Eagle or, appropriately enough, Imperial Courier for them.

I enjoyed doing the courier missions. Stack 10-15 at a time. Then go deliver legal papers etc. You'll get harrassed sometimes but its ok. Well, unless its THAT npc.

Don't know where you can find such a place to stack them with the new patch.

One more thing. Since making 100% marquis, I have not seen any rank missions. I did more empire missions to be sure I wasn't just at 99.9% but still nothing.

They also give transport missions, so it might be wise to get Python or even Conda (if you don't mind losing missions for outposts).

Looks like a bug, be sure to report it. Sadly, I cannot just go and check (4% Duke and 100% Admiral, so it would be a really long time before I see any Navy mission)

Thanks for the info everyone! I was doing a "Take this item to this system" mission. I start to pull up to the Hab when I get a message telling me that I need to take my items to Psi Octantis (I was originally supposed to go to Cubeo.) So I go out t Psi Octantis and get to the port I'm supposed to go to and there is no way to turn the mission in. I then get a message telling me that if I can get it there in the next 4 minutes, that I would get a nice bonus. I was sitting in the dock when I got the message! Still couldn't turn it in! None of the Mission Board people had it so that I could turn it in. I ended up having to get rid of the quest and got a fine for my troubles. Bugged mission.

I have done a lot of missions since originally posting this and my naval rank has not gone up a single bit. Does the mission have to state that it is a Naval mission? Am I just getting rep with the locals? I am already Ally with the Empire and a bunch of locals in various systems (I turned in 6 months worth or exploration data to various peoples.)

Well, I got to HIP 10716 and boy were there a lot of courier missions! Once I accepted all those, I went to Solo and took a bunch more to the same destination: Wu Guinagi. I do have to say that I get interdicted a LOT. I was 3 light seconds out from Bode Hub and got interdicted 3 times in that short distance. Something called Impulse fire took down my shields in 1 hit a couple of times. So if you do go to HIP 10716 be prepared to take a lot of fire!

Thanks to you all for the info! =)
