How to get fun out of this game

Hi guys

Disclaimer: I know this is beta and I appreciate that it is not a finished product.

However how some of you guys manage to farm to any other ship than the sidewinder is beyond me. First thing I noticed is that the biggest money is in 'trading'. Which is not really trading but mainly silly busy work. Load up Tea, sell it and on the way back buy medicine. Do this 45 times (I calculated it) to get the next best ship. Then rinse and repeat. Where is the fun in that? Yes sure I could fly through space randomly but what is the point? I like to do things the efficient way, not find the most inefficient ways of trading just so I have done them too.

Yes landing is a challenge the first 10 times. After the 100th landing it becomes second nature and is done in seconds. Then just wait for a few animations to play, sell, buy, fuel, go. I tried to fly to some unidentified signal sources but sometimes there is nothing there, sometimes there is a bigger ship that just runs away from a sidewinder (why?) after I do a few pew pews on it.

Where is the fun currently? How do you guys manage to get so much money?

Kind regards
KimJongIl

Take a chance, you have a free ship so use it accordingly. I know I have posted this about three times before in other threads but it is worth repeating...I upgraded from a sidewinder in 1 trip by scooping 4 tonnes of floating battle weapons near Eranin station and selling them on for a huge sum each to someone on the bulletin board in Dahan.

Other ways to make money(but with risk of ship loss but again the important thing being the ship is free) include flying to an anarchy system and targeting signal sources and maybe having a chance of finding some floating gold.

Or killing pirates for bounties-again, remember your ship was free, what the hell if it does get blown to smithereens. You are fighting for your life so of course there is risk but it is ultimately much more satisfying than trucking 4 tonnes of whatever between systems repeatedly.
Maybe pirate a hauler or type 6. If it is an npc you wont have to kill it, just shoot it till it drops stuff and then buggers off.

The above suggestions are not just for the advanced player, I work a 8 or 9 hour day and have been playing this game about three weeks and have done all of the above.

Bottom line:- Experiment, don't just take the path of least resistance or play safe mode.

Hope this helps

fun is in preparing for the game, i know there will be reset, i know grinding is boring but now is the last time to find YOUR way of starting the game after the reset in gamma, so you will know exactly WHAT to do.

also even pointless flying is IMPROVING your flying skill and i already do many things without thinking as it comes out naturally, it might not be fun and more like a work than a game atm but after i earned enough money i can do things i would not do normally, just buy and test all weapons/modules, go to different places, try killing things and different locations.

game is not always fun, game is to do things that are leading to fun ;) money means fun, but after you have enough money there is only combat and testing load outs, getting used to your desired ship...

so while it's not fun always now it's a good preparation to have fun in gamma, at least for me, or you will be at the same position in gamma as you are now - no clue how to get money fast for your lakon or viper.

also don't forget that retail release will be much easier, you will not lose all because you can't pay the insurance as you can take loan, there will be reputation system so making many regular light cargo runs will bring more and more complex and lucrative missions, but the main thing why gamma will be piece of cake - most of us will start in cobras, yay, so no more stupid 4 tonne grinding ever!

just find things that you want to test and go for it ;)

Ever heard the one where a theologian made up a heretical doctrine and convinced the Patriarch to accept it and then cheerfully withdrew his statements and admitted wrongdoing?

Me neither.

Welcome; I did a double take on your name and thought that a certain North Korean had joined the ranks of the prospective Elite ranks... :D
Anyways, fun, The strength of this game is that you can do whatever floats your boat even in it's restricted current form.
The trading aspect is just a means to an end, i.e. to get a better ship/ equipment.
But there are other ways to have fun, for instance last night I bought a Viper, tricked it up and spent the evening at the Federal distress beacon taking out enemy ships and earning 10k doing it.

Honestly, what we have at the moment isn't really long term fun.

That isn't meant as a damning statement of ED, but fundamentally the game takes 2 paths at present:

1) Have a blast in combat scenarios or opportunistic PvP near stations.
2) Make loads of cash by travelling virtually risk free between a bunch of stations whose fundamental difference is the scenery.

Graphically, I really like ED, on the DK2 (as juddery as I'm finding it now) it's fantastic to look at - it's the nearest I'll ever get to being in outer space.

But there is no longevity in the current build, however you decide to mash it up it wouldn't hold my interest for more than a few weeks at the very most.

Fortunately, this build is the very tip of the iceberg and the excitement (fun) lies in knowing that it's just going to get much, much better as new stuff filters in. What I'm doing right now is getting used to the fundamentals so I'm not buried under a pile of new features further down the line - I'm learning to crawl before trying to walk.

As a player from Alpha 2.0 (Alpha 1.x doesn't count) I know how bad this was at it's worst, and every progressive build has been better.

The fun to me, is just floating in my boat...

OP - did you ever go out for a drive just to see where you would end up...? Thats Elite.

For fun, I play the game naked, put my bass speaker under my seat and fly really close to stars in super cruise.

Your idea of fun may differ.

There's certainly no fun in solo play (I still don't like the idea of it:rolleyes:) Get into open multiplay and seek out other players.

I don't play the current build of the game as I don't want ruin it for myself latter. I have logged two hours Max on current beta.

By trading more profitable commodities you should be able to cut that 45 trips down to maybe 15. The hauler is only 23k I think. Then you have 16 tons to work with. Next is a cobra with 36 tons. Lakon 6 100 tons. Lakon 9 440 tons! Each ship upgrade radically increases your profits.

Anyway, That's how.

There is a certain zen peacefulness to just crusing thruogh space doing cargo deliveries ....especially with the rift on :)

I like a few others am limiting my use of ED as it is only part there and it would be a shame to spoil it before its finished.

but that being said, fun for me is trying all the ships that i can to see what they are like in the rift.

I knew i was unlikely to ever buy a hauler so i had a dabble in that.

it is unlikely i will get up to the lakon 9 or anaconda however which is a shame as i would like a dablle in those.

So fun for me is doing what i am unlikley to do in the main game (main game my ship is likely to be a viper or possibly an asp/cobra for the majority.......

I would say just to play devils advocate....... YES there is much more to come, but, if you really are not enjoying what there is so far, then I do think maybe this game is not for you (nothing wrong with that there are lots of great games i just cant get on with)

The garnishing is not here yet, but what we have right now is the meat and potatoes of the game imo.

Grind

I like the grind no problem with it, this is a simulation...you wanna make guaranteed cash then fly 100 times and buy and sell, you get really good at docking, and quickly get to a lakon or something, feel the thrill as you crawl through space with 100 units of animal meat, desperately trying to fend off pirates. I tried flying round signal sources, it's not all it's cracked up to be, usually pirates or something haven't actually found gold once yet.
My advice is do the trade grind make lots of cr then you can do what you like, but until you have lots of cr it's a bit crap :)

"How to get fun out of this game"

Well, i grinded in a uterly boring way 200k credits (Trading, wihout any challange : This NEEDS to be harder, MUCH harder), played arround with the Viper for a while and now i am bored. I realy hope for the next few month that give us much more deph, at the moment the gameplay is flat and shallow. Ah, and the Game is way to easy, i would call it "Elite : Harmless" atm :D

To answer your question : At the momen ED is a promise, nohting more. Its NOT a game t have fun with, its a Beta to test first raw gameplay mechanics.

I made some nice profits by just flying to any unidentified signal sources on my way to stations whilst just cruising.

I have come accross 3 now, lacon type 6s with a wanted status.

on destroying (actually only killed 2, 1 made it away with their lives but still dropped their cargo) they drop random goods, the most profitable for me being slaves... they bring a hell of a profit on the black market, esp when you consider you get them for free.
