How to get fun out of this game

it's not really a game yet

so just try out some things and when you are bored, move on and wait for next beta or final release

Fun? Fun? FUN???

This is Elite son, you ever play Frontier? Now that was a grind. 20 years later I could still do the Barnards Star to Sol trade run with my eyes closed.

but the main thing why gamma will be piece of cake - most of us will start in cobras, yay, so no more stupid 4 tonne grinding ever!

Speak for yourself....... :p

whilst due to my KS backing level I have a whole host of starting options, I have no intention of "cheating" myself out of the knowledge that I did it myself

(and the argument that you did it in beta so you already earned it is kind of moot imo as it has already been stated that money comes way easier in beta than it will on release).

Personally I think FD should come up with a small, but easily identified alteration to our ranking insignia, or perhaps a badge we can put on the outside of our ships for those of us who reject this easy way out and go the full Monty :)

NOTE, not having a pop at those who do use these crutches it is your choice, the only person you are cheating is yourself and if you are happy with that then so be it.

Hi guys

Disclaimer: I know this is beta and I appreciate that it is not a finished product.

However how some of you guys manage to farm to any other ship than the sidewinder is beyond me. First thing I noticed is that the biggest money is in 'trading'. Which is not really trading but mainly silly busy work. Load up Tea, sell it and on the way back buy medicine. Do this 45 times (I calculated it) to get the next best ship. Then rinse and repeat. Where is the fun in that? Yes sure I could fly through space randomly but what is the point? I like to do things the efficient way, not find the most inefficient ways of trading just so I have done them too.

Yes landing is a challenge the first 10 times. After the 100th landing it becomes second nature and is done in seconds. Then just wait for a few animations to play, sell, buy, fuel, go. I tried to fly to some unidentified signal sources but sometimes there is nothing there, sometimes there is a bigger ship that just runs away from a sidewinder (why?) after I do a few pew pews on it.

Where is the fun currently? How do you guys manage to get so much money?

Kind regards
KimJongIl

The game is not holding your hand telling you what to do, instead it is just presenting an universe and you are free to do whatever you want. Trading is just one aspect of the game. It provides relatively safe income, but is also slow. As in real life, you need to take higher risks to gain higher rewards. There are missions, pirating, mining and lots of other stuff in the final version.

Elite is not for everyone, many players like linear games more, which will have more "fun" packed in as every player will follow the exact same route. So it is easy for the developers to pack this route full of cutscenes, story elements and so on. It is way harder to make an open ended game like Elite, and make sure everyone has a fun experience, as the player is responsible for creating his own story. All they can do is throwing as many opportunities to fun and exploration at the player as possible.

Personally I hate linear games, and absolutely love open ended sandbox games where you can immerse yourself fully into the role of someone else in a different time and place. The linear gaming genre is pretty overcrowded though, so if you like that kind of games more you are in luck. I will enjoy this rare little pearl though. :)

Now before I ask this question, I'm going to state that I'm not poking at the OP and this is a genuine question.

OP, are you sure the problem isn't just you having instant gratification issues?

I ask as it seems to be a common problem these days.

Eranin is very poor trade port, in the "starter" systems you I suggest running between ibootis (buy fish) and one of the rich systems e.g aulin enterprise (buy terrain enrichment systems or agricultural medicines) or asellus primus (robotics or auto fabricators).

To make money, I buy Advanced Catalysts in Asellus Primus to sell in Dahan, and buy Tantalum in Dahan to sell in Asellus Primus. About 15,000 profit round trip in a Hauler, and a very fast single jump trip.

For fun (and to save my ship from sneaky pirates, when you have 80,000 worth of tantalum, you want to be careful), I'm flying my Hauler at 300 m/s with flight assist off, which I find rather challenging at the moment. It is rather amusing - when I was playing as a bounty hunter, a combat oriented role, I never really felt the need to learn FA off advanced tactics. Now that I'm a peaceful, harmless space truck driver, I find myself learning some pretty awesome turns and twists as I try to align my ship to the space station entrance as fast as possible. Basically, this game has quite a bit of hidden depth, but you have to make an effort to discover it.

Trading does seem to be the way to make proper $$$$$.

I spent a week trading to get a couple of million CR with the plan of simply then being able to afford to do other stuff in the game... I'm now playing around with combat and next I'll try spending some time in anarchic systems next to see what happens :)

I might try a bit of piracy too as there's no downside to it in such systems!

The profession system is not implemented yet so you really have to get a little creative with your time. Use the time to test weapons, bugs, fine tune your pilot skills, go fight off the pvpers at Freeport, or just sit back and take in the atmosphere.

This is very early beta with a phase called gamma comming up which is foreign to most people who expect a beta to be a near finish product.
