How to insure, and how to make money

And these resource sites are in systems with asteroid belts, yes?
No.
You want systems with ringed planets (Eg. like Saturn in our system).
Ideal systems are ones with a major Starbase close to the Res site. Systems with Outposts close to the res site would be your second choice.
Some systems won't have Res sites immediately visible on your Nav panel when you jump into them. They can be outside your scanner range. I have found a couple in my travels that were good systems to fight in; but the res sites were over 1500 ls away from the Nav Beacon (but under 10,000 ls).
It is also advantageous to have a system with a major Starbase close to the Nav Beacon (primary star) one jump away. - Set this system in your Nav Computer when you enter the Res. As it gives you a quick "out" if you run into trouble. This also gives you an "out" if you incur a bounty for hitting a target before you have scanned them (this happens to me occasionally).
Explanantion: If you hit someone before the scan comes back with "clean" or "wanted" you will immediately have a minor bounty placed on you. If you are in Low-High Res sites, System Security will attack you and you'll need to jump out (Actually, if you do make this mistake; jump out immediately and wait the 5 minutes. Instead of waiting until System Security attacks).
Jumping (after waiting 5 minutes) will clear the "Wanted" tag. The fine will still need to be paid; but system security won't attack you.
One last thing: When first heading in to fight at Res site. Dock at the station closest to the Res site FIRST. -That way if you do die, you will spawn at that station.

Thanks all! I apreciate the help.

Now, regarding means of making money. Besides trading, and exploring (not sure I'm ready to explore just yet), how else can you make money?

Well, you have a Cobra Mk III and a fuel scoop. That's pretty much all you need for a Robigo run. Check the forums for this topic, and with some skill and experience you'll make millions in no time. Good luck, CMDR!

Nice, are there any systems that are known for their rings and/or res sites?

I found a thread on reddit about this, but do you really need to head to a lawless system to get these missions?

you can use the tool in the first post of this thread, to find a inhabited system close by with a pristine metallic ring... those will have RES sites for sure: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=156428

beside that, you basically only have to look for inhabited systems with ringed gasplanets. many extraction economies have one (filter your galaxy map by economic type), but not all.

it isn't about the state ("lawless"), it is about the distance from other inhabited systems. all of these systems spawn longdistance haul- and smuggling missions: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=229162

There are tons of Res site systems. I would basically poke around the systems closest to your base of operations while trading/exploring, and check your nav panel when you enter a system. And while flying toward a station.
PS. I am getting no return on Gunovole in the Galactic map.
Did you spell the system name correctly?

I wouldn't go near the Robigo smuggler run at this point as it requires a certain skill level for success.

Interesting. Thanks for that info. I haven't logged on in a couple of days, as I don't want to get burned out on the game. But I'll have to checkout this troa barton.

This one is regarding Rank Grinding. He has several in his list though (including smuggling).
Also: IF you are finding Bounty Hunting to be your 'niche" you may want to look at declaring for a faction in Powerplay that rewards that activity.
Eg. I am declared for Zack Hudson atm. He pays an additional %20 on bounties collected. And if he does well on the week he pays even more.
This can be a big advantage. And not hard to attain.
