How to Make ED More Comfy

I had a good evening tonight. I played some adrenaline pumping music, and followed a fleet of security Anacondas around, blasting space pirates with glee that borderlines on sociopathic as I am want to do after a day of work IRL. The play list ends with a couple of happy old school tunes, the kind of stuff you'd hear in any recent Fallout game. That's my cue to head back to the station I'm presently calling home, cash in bounties, repairs, then retire IRL for another day of earning IRL rent money.

I've done this before, many times in fact, but for some reason things are different tonight. Maybe it is the decision to approach the station slowly to avoid "speeding" for which there is still no penalty. I take in the impressive sight of that massive hunk of spinning steel as I slowly make my approach. The geometric station is a marvel of engineering that causes me to contemplate how gravity works for the denizens of that oddly shaped place. The blue gas giant looms in the distance, almost featureless but for the black shadow running across it. And, Bob Crosby is in my ear, singing about way back home, where everything was the bestiest. Suddenly, in that moment, I forget I am wearing a DK2. I am totally relaxed, coming home from "work" and I've not felt this comfortable in a virtual setting since--well, probably never before. The only thing that could make it better is going to my virtual captain's cabin, with green plants in the corners to remind me of some home world I left long ago, in the fictional story of my pilot's life. But there are no ship interiors yet.

The head set came off and I feel disappointment when I see my darkened room-- a boring generic box in a generic city. I'm born in an exciting age of technological advancement, but casual space travel in personal space ships will never be for me--a depressing thought. But, let's take a moment to remark on how incredible it is that VR and ED can transport us to a fictional universe where these dreams can be experienced. I must have more of it!

In your estimation, what else could Frontier do to make ED more "comfy?"

Tbh, I mixed some ASMR computer noises from the Ebon Hawk from KOTOR, and mixed it with the Family Room music from X-wing Alliance. I put that on repeat and I've got my only little bleep noises and space radio in the background. Also could suggest mixing in the Main Menu music from Mech Warrior 4 Mercenaries. :)

More ambient ship noises? I agree. The sound design in ED is excellent. I bet Frontier would nail it.

Alright, I got the perfect comfy going on:

1.) find cool looking planet that has no life whatsoever (no outposts, etc), ice moons a best.

2.) turn on Boards of Canada, Tomorrow's Harvest

3.) land on planet

4.) deploy SRV

5.) enjoy the feels as you drive around

Upon further consideration, the addition of the ship interior would go the furthest for maximum comfy.

Some other changes that would be nice:
1. integrated play list, with reverb appropriate for cabin size, with auto mute when the radio is picking up transmissions.
2. A more closed-in cabin feel for some of the larger ships.
3. A greater sense of speed and progression. The lights dancing by a la "warp drive" just don't really cut it. They fail to impart a sense of progress for me. Obviously, the stars in the background are so far they one wouldn't expect them to noticeably move either. I'm not really sure how a sense of travel could be imparted. Tough nut to crack. Space would actually be quite boring to travel through.
4. Higher resolution window texture, and just better fidelity within the cockpits in general.
5. More customization of the cockpits, preferably not hidden behind an obscenely expensive paywall. Decals, plants, more bobble heads, air fresheners, and so on. Color customization would be amazing. The cockpit is, afterall, the thing players see the most. It makes more sense to have custom colors for the cockpit over the ship exterior.

Go to Soma FM, look for a station called "Mission control", put that on in the background at about 15 percent volume, it blends perfectly with the game... and uses samples from the Apollo astronauts in conjunction with beats, synth noises etc... it provides lots of great ambiance

The big thing that was missing for me is the rumbling from the power plant. The sounds are perfect in this game, especially when combined with a transducer attached to the seat, but the lack of any rumble killed it for me.

I use the video below as a substitute, it plays whenever I'm using ED, it works perfectly with a bass transducer attached to a gaming chair, a low deep rumble that you can feel more then hear, combined with VR it's pure relaxation for me. The game feels strange if I can't feel that rumbling.

Yes! Very much yes to the first point you make! I can also agree on most of your other suggestions, but that first one: please make that happen fd!
I like to listen to music while playing as well, but it doesn't fit the ambiance of all the other ingame sounds. That would be awesome.

Stellardrone makes great space exploration game music. Last I checked it had some type of CC license as well, and is available to download for free or whatever you want to pay.
