How to Make Money with Mining

Hope you enjoy this informative video!

I'll watch this with some trepidation... I tried mining last night (Python, 4 collectors and a prospector, 10-bin refinery)...
1.5hrs netted me 140,000cr.
Not much, but helped by the 48,000 bounty I got by taking out 3 NPC Vipers that found me. Pristine Metal-rich belt (I know)... so maybe not the best mining location.
My local station didn't have any money-for-rubble or other add-value bulletin board missions.

Not being able to target the asteroids annoyed me.
Not being able to see the asteroids on radar (well, tiny blips and only one at a time at all scales)
Not being able to tell which way was up down north/whatever annoyed me. I kept getting turned around, particularly after the pirate attack and re-scanning depleted asteroids.
Not being able to tell a prospector limpet from a collector limpet in the Contacts screen annoyed me.
And I found my first annoying sound in ED. The collector drone engine noise. Too mnaga-cartoonish. Yuk.

I know mining, I'm a geologist irl.
ED isn't mining by any stretch of the imagination, but I have found it interesting enough in other games.

I'll give it another crack tonight in a different Pristine Metallic belt and see what turns up. I don't give up too easily. :)

Edit: I should add it didn't hold a candle to trading in my Anaconda. Heh, I know its not really supposed to.

Hey RedRaven

The station has to be high tech to even have a chance of spawning mining missions.
The only way to 'target' asteroids is to launch and attach a prospector limpet to them, then target the limpet and see it on radar as well as get distance.
The best way to not go in circles seem to be to pick an environment reference. I personally keep the planet targetted when in rings, but belt would be more tricky.
I completely agree about all the limpets looking the same in contacts! They should color code them... like they already do for other target types.
Try to go to a pristine metallic ring planet instead of a belt... lots more asteroids closer together and easier to tell direction.
Here is a list to help:

Is that you Stephen Hawking? (btw you should hang on to the Silver, Gold and Palladium for the transport missions that occasionally turn up, they don't pay as well as mining missions but they do pay above market value).
