How to make multiple ships work best

Next step is to buy an ASP, fully upgrade it and keep it stationed somewhere good near the edge of populated space, ready for my first extreme long range trip into the void.

The thing about the asp is that it is the best shuttle. Rather than flying from your trading base to where you have parked the asp why not store the asp in your trading base, that way you can quickly reach whatever edge of space you want to?

I bought an asp last night fitted out for exploration in founders world, went a few hundred light years out, explored a few systems and then returned. I was just curious to see how much I would be paid with detailed scans etc. and hoped to move from "mostly aimless" to "scout" which at least sounds alot better! only made 80k or so and didn't move rank, i have no idea what the thresholds are. Anyway this evening I will take it out and not come back. Will try to find systems which have not had their stars explored to put my name on them. Pretty sure with 400 billion out there there it can't be too hard to find a few :)

It is not expensive though, I expected it to cost more to fit out the asp. Came to less than 20 million, I used 4D power plant (or 3D maybe), 4D shields and 6C fuel scoop. Two scanners and D rating in the rest except a 3A automaintenance.

Was tempted to go for A rated thrusters but I didn't - I should know but i am not sure if thrusters affect turn rate in supercruise? I think it may be only FSD but i am not certain. 32 LY range.

I've found that I need to move my income source base about 150ly. That's one big trade ship, a fighter and a hauler.

This is when it seems to really go badly or does it? I'm not sure of the maths.

Hypothetically speaking,

Would it be cheaper to sell all three - A class a Cobra, D class Hauler and C lass Python and rebuy them at the other end rather than fly them individually?

No so hypothetically speaking. It looks like I have to sell two of the three and travel 150ly and rebuy when I set up my tent at the destination.

Which of the three should I hang on to? Not sure how much is lost in sell and rebuy compared to the fuel cost. I know a python chews up a lot in fuel but is it more or less than selling and buy a new one at the other end? I just dont know...

Any clever mathamagicans out there?

Just buy a top rated fuel scoop and sell it when you arrive.

I mean for teh python - you could probably sell teh cobra and hauler once stripped down to save the travel time.

Fuel and Running costs over multiple trips in an ASP are a bit high if you want to

just sight see
pop off to one of the community goals at yembo
Have a quick fight
and so on

It can do all those things at a cost. Compared to using a ship tailored to the job in hand. Running an ASP to explore is hugely expensive compared to running a hauler. Cant quite explain what I mean so I might pop back and edit this...

Edit. What I'm trying to get working nicely is using multiple ships each fro different uses rather than a one size fits all approach... or some such.. er

Location, Location, Location. I am still looking for an ideal location in empire space for a base. Ideal for trading, bounty hunting, mining and close to some conflict zones. I agree the hauler is the better option as a taxi. I still use the Asp as fighter/trader, but use a cobra for mining. Also as long as they are all 50 LY of each other multiples is doable.

You're right. Location makes all the difference especially if you have a couple of ships. An extra ship gives you more options. So you don need that perfect spot and if something interesting happens elsewhere you can nip off and take a look in a fast scout like a D class hauler.

The Galaxy map now has icons showing your ships which is great if you want to get a feel for where the actions is at for you

Currently I have a Type-9 and Clipper stationed at TZ Arietis, the station stocks pretty much every upgrade and is near to my main Trade routes. I then have an Eagle,Cobra and Viper Nearby at various warzones. The rest of the ships are maxed Adders ( great long range shuttles between ships.. And lastly a whole bunch of sidewinders and Eagles that act as marker ships.

The marker ships allow me to see how far I am away from various systems by looking in the shipyard, all my marker ships are located at either high value trade routes, populated sites of interest or Stations for good upgrades. Have 39 ships so far.

Next step is to buy an ASP, fully upgrade it and keep it stationed somewhere good near the edge of populated space, ready for my first extreme long range trip into the void.

God and thought I was going over the top with 5 T9, Python, T6, Hauler and a Sidewinder +++ reps for you..

Think I'm on 18 now. Sidewinders as post it notes really make a difference. And a taxi between places of interest too. I've found multiple ships means you get out more and dont need to find that magical 'base' that does everything. When you can have a few around the galaxy that give you the gaming experiences you are after.

Fuel cost and ship cost reductions are looking good for multiple ship owners.

By the way are there any ship collectors out there working on a fleet containing one of each ship?

How's this for an idea?

With the 10% sale loss thing for modules. Why not have a ship for swapping in and out all your spare modules. I wonder if it would be cost efficient? Hmmm...

Good idea but that would have to be an Anaconda for the largest variety of module classes.
But ... nah ... all this jumping just for module changes? If you got multiple ships anyway then you can have same types with different outfittings ...
