I am currently in the process of getting to grade 5 with all engineers that I have access to and realised that you can sell them (rare) goods to gain reputation.
Now my suggestion is rather simple but important:
Make rare goods as effective as crafting modules for gaining repuation - or do it the other way round, make module crafting less effective. Besides that the only thing that counts when selling goods is the profit. You could sell an insane amount of an abdundant ressource or few tons of rare goods - there is no difference if the profit is the same. However there should be one! How about the engineers demand rare goods not just for unlocking but also for gaining repuation. Generally speaking: make the engineers demand rare goods all the time. Currently rare goods have no real use except making money - thats nice for beginners but later on you need them ONCE and then you forget about them. How about you, Frontier, change that?!
So lets say after you unlocked Her Tani with those 50t of Kamitra cigars she demands some kind of other rare good (randomly selected, adjusted to max supply). However you dont have to donate it, you can make money out of it but engins ever only pay the galactic average price.
Or you get free rolls if you donate x tonnes of a rare good. 15t of Waters of Shintara give you two free rolls for example.
Anyway I think its clear what the idea is. Of course this need carefull tweaking but you, Frontier, are currently tweaking core gameplay such as c&p and crafting in general so I think that my idea is a rather small change compared to the big ones you are doing.
