If only we could "turn off" spare fuel tanks in our module panel that way they wouldn't fill when we scooped and the route planner would ignore them until we "turned them on" (at which point we could fill them up).
The point was raised in beta.
It is an issue, even if minor. I often thought dumping fuel would help as your reduced mass increases your jump range. I am basing this on recalculating my route half way through my journey reduces the jumps I need to complete it. Pretty sure of that but could be wrong.
