How to make use of mines?

Trying to make use of them in a Type 7 Transport, 4 Small hardpoints with mine launchers along with 2 chaff Launchers. Just now got to test it against an NPC viper, spammed quite a few think only 1 maybe 2 managed to detonate on him reducing his shields to 75%. Wondering if theirs a method to it other then trying to line yourself up in a way where he's directly behind you.

You'd have more luck with 4 small pulse turrets than mines. They are practically useless in their current stage.
 
It could be better if they made them homing mines, so if an aggressor is within 500m, the mines fly towards them, and they need to be far more destructive than they currently, as atm they are pretty useless.

This. Would also be cool if they had a maximum speed and if you had a fast enough ship you could eventually outrun them. But to do this you would have to fly a straight line at maximum speed for some time.
 
Dang that's unfortunate, was hoping to use them to discourage Player controlled craft from pursuing me. Will still try to play with them anyway other then just having them removed thus increasing jump range, theirs not too much of a reason to put anything else their. Since this ship hopeless in a traditional fight.
 
I was excited to see them getting a buff, unfortunately they are still useless...
if they upped the damage by 300% spawned 3X as many mines per shot, we're all homing and only attacked valid targets they would be okay. As it stands now though they tickle at best, provide an interesting sound effect at worst.
 
Mines have been useless since Wing Commander 1. The Raptor had one mine that you could drop out in the rear. I actually once managed to kill a Kilrathi who was badly damaged on my tail, and I dropped a mine out the rear.
