How to maximise range for Rare trading.

The basic parameter for rare trading as the amounts available are very low is to maximise your range and allowing you to be flexible and speed between locations, sounds obvious, but many of the ‘rares’ are in places, not surprisingly in difficult to reach places – some locations are 0.5 million LS from the jump point! Configuration of your ship is to look for weight savings on loadout, this increases range when combined with a more powerful Frame Shift Drive and allows you to travel that distance in real time of about 15 minutes. The most important thing therefore is to have a range part or fully laden (in the case of the Adder 14/16 tonnes) of 22+ LY and to have the fastest Frame Shift Drive possible.

My load out on an Adder (note this does require you to have done enough trading/combat to afford this combination), however this is the cost break-even point for rare trading in my opinion, you can do it with a Hauler. Eagle or a Sidewinder, but you will be suffering tedium from trading very low quantities. This configuration will allow you to trade 14 tonnes of cargo for approximately 100 – 150,000 credits per run. Because of the 22 + range you can usually trade at least 2-3 times an hour travelling the 130- 160 LY's between sales.

Also never trade beyond your insurance costs, but 'rares' are so profitable 1 or 2 runs and you will not have an issue….

Adder Configuration

Unladen Range 28.15
Current 22.42
Laden 21.79
No weapons
Lightweight alloys
Power Plant A2 1.30 tonnes
Thrusters D2 1.00 tonnes
Frame Shift Drive A3 5.00 tonnes (500+k credits)
Life Support D1 0.50 tonnes
Power Distribution D2 1.00 tonnes
Sensors D3 2.00 tonnes
Fuel Tank C3 (8 tonnes fuel standard)
Cargo Rack 8 tonnes x2
Shield Generator D2 1.00 tonnes (you could dispense with this but I do not believe it is worth the hassle)
Fuel Scoop C2 (any fuel scoop will do, but the longer you are hanging around the more chance YOU will be interdicted so get the best you can afford! This one can give a fill up of about 40 per second)
Standard Docking Computer stops fatigue and that crash you have been trying to avoid (Shields help you here too from a rampant NPC blocking the exit as well).

Anyways I hope you find this useful as a starting point.

Found the hauler to be much cheaper and dont need 500000fsd drive.17 jump ranges 12000 profit per ton20 mins max journey time as stations near jump points. takes 18 t but dont tend to get much more doing rares

I am/was getting in excess of 26k per tonne :) which would be a very high return if I had a full 14 tonnes but limited to 5 tonnes on that particular item...

I stripped out a Type 6 with only a 34 (or was it 32?) ton cargo hold, and a couple of upgrades (nothing too fancy) to the powerplant/FSD. That'll have the range to make trading rares not feel like it's taking forever.

What distance are you having to travel to yield 26k per tonne and is that profit. Currently trying a bit in cobra. 18 tonne bay.

That was exceptional and yes profit but only 5 tonnes (max) and it was about 170 LY as well as 500k Trip to station to sell! - just did an easier run and I got 18k profit per tonne for special wine bought at Aegaeon for over 160+ LY .

THe problem I found is that using a Cobra it is not the size of the bay but the range and the cost to get the range to make it 3 jumps not 40 :). I posted earlier on how to maximise range in this post. However to get the creds then you use an adder or hauler to get the range needed without spending 1.6M for the FSD Drive alone to get the 22+ LY range to jump quickly between the various ports for rares...

just as a point of interest...im running a Cobra.....with 40t capacity just no basic discovery scanner but otherwise A everything except lifesupport and thrusters (both C) i go 200ly with a full cargo of Rare items, total costs are 90K ( inc buying the goods + fuel out and back) and make a profit of 16k/t minimum..... my laden jump range is 19ly (22ly empty) takes approx 12 jumps out and 10 back = a minimum profit of 640k

I use an A rated type 6, 100t cargo to do a 34 jump Rares tour taking in 16 Rares stations before going on a 150LY trek to sell

Makes 1.6mill a trip

I run this route, furthest station is 7000ls from jump in point, next furthest is 6000ls, most are 200-700ls from jump in point.. http://eliteraretrader.co.uk/?route...0,45,22,19,97,41,86,16,66&name=Full Optimized which comes from this thread.. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=63119&highlight=Rare

This is someone else route they found, I take no credit for it at all! Fun to run in an Asp with exploration scanners as well, as I come across quite a few unknown systems and a quick BONG! of the Advanced Scanner helps boost the earnings :)

I have 32T cobra, Upgraded FSD with a B4, route I do is below. Nets around 300 - 400K

With the FSD upgraded and setting fastest jumps on galaxy map I have made a.5 million in afew days without it feeling like a grind.

Hope it's useful to someone.

Zaonce > Lave > Leesti > Diso > Orrere > Shinrarta Dezhra > AZ Cancri > Bast > Zeessze > Altair > George Pantazis > Fujin > 39 Tauri > Epsilon Ind

That cobra can carry 36T of cargo. Get it an upgrade and start trading in multiple rares.

you can, without shields, get the cobra to 60.
i have an asp now, and with a lv3 shield, i can get it to 116 tons, which is 12 off max.

basically, any cargo bay that a ship starts with, can automatically be doubled straight off the bat. also the cobra has a blank slot can either have a weak shield, or another cargo slot (to take it to 60).

there are some good cases where a huge FSD isnt required. i have a trade run between 2 systems only 14.1LY away, which is netting me 260k every 14 mins, or over 1million / hour (i have a 116 ton cargo asp btw).
i've seen in many cases that a good normal commodity trade run is better than rare trade runs, or at least on par.

I traded rares for a few weeks in a similar Adder to the OP. I thought it was the mutts nutts, until I splashed out 5m on a Cobra. Instead if making 250k a trip, the Cobra makes me nearer 700k which comes down to the larger hold and trading rares around multiple destinations - I make sure the hold is full for the long legs.
The real advantage to running the Cobra is that I can empty the rares out of the hold and muck about in conflict zones or navigation beacons when I feel like a change. And it I get interdicted by an NPC I throttle down and have fun.

I still have the Adder. It was kitted for exploration with a jump range around 30ly, currently it's stripped out as it was racing in the Buckyball Run last week (mid-sole obscurity). I won't be selling the Adder, she did me proud on rare runs in the early days.
