Newcomer / Intro How to migrate/transfer Horizons custom bindings to Odyssey

If you, like me, have saved your Custom Controller Bindings and have found that they don't work in Odyssey, don't panic. They actually do.
All you need to do is to change the MajorVersion="3" to MajorVersion="4" and then place this in the relevant folders below:
C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Local\Frontier_Developments\Products\elite-dangerous-64\ControlSchemes\
C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Local\Frontier_Developments\Products\elite-dangerous-odyssey-64\ControlSchemes\
or:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch\Products\elite-dangerous-64\ControlSchemes\
C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch\Products\elite-dangerous-odyssey-64\ControlSchemes\
Some of you may have moved your Frontier folder to a different drive.
Now you can select the new bindings file for Horizons and all but "Foot Travel" in Odyssey. If you do select it for the latter then be sure to go in and set up bindings for that too and you will get a new "Custom.4.0.binds" file made up of all the bindings files used combined.

Why are your putting these in with the game's defaults? The game looks to load your altered bindings in the Options\Bindings directory:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

Your post is actually nonsensical really, the game itself takes the "custom.3.0.binds" file (or whatever you are using / listed in start.preset) and creates a new 4.0.binds file and is actually now supposed to insert default bindings for the on-foot section.

I suspect you think you have to do this because you are not using the Options\Bindings directory.

I think your OP is dangerous in not using the Options directory and will merely serve to confuse newcomers and should be removed.

Hi there Para Handy
Good to see you again.
Not finding the "Vital Spark" in our waters lately.

The Options bindings folder only uses the often lost Custom binds files.
Besides which I have several controllers that I use;
Logitech F710
XBox
XBox One
Logitech X51 Hotas with pedals
Azeron

Which custom file do you suggest I keep and where?
I have no idea why you suppose that my post is dangerous or confusing.
The Custom.3.0.binds file may or may not work with the new Odyssey controllers for you, mine did not.
Having spent many hours customising my bindings files I had no desire to start over, and my Horizons bindings worked for all of the Odyssy files bar the foot ones which default to whichever file you choose to use for it. As soon as you customise that file however you start over with saving your bindings if you so choose.
I clearly stated in the OP that this is merely a follow on for those people that followed my earlier post to preserve their custom bindings. It is not meant for newcomers and will most certainly not be deleted.

........

In your previous thread you were using the Options\Bindings folder. Did you start keeping your binds in with the defaults and did they not get automatically cloned to 4.0.binds versions by Odyssey? Did you edit that to use the defaults folder?

I suspect not using %LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings has the possibility of confusing newcomers and possibly giving issues when people make their own changes to their binds as surely those changes get written to Options not the ControlSchemes directory.

That is why I posted my comments above.

BTW - Vital Spark is happily sailing over the Horizons and has no intention of embarking on an Odyssey until they sort it out. ;)

You will perhaps note that in my previous post I used the Custom.x.binds file from Options folder, as the basis for preserving a file with a more firiendly name, in the ControlSchemes folder, as an optional step in preserving bindings in a folder far away from where FDev can delete or lose them.
All my files were lost to me after the update, including the Custom options leaving me with the defaults for everything including Horizons. It was later when I found that I could import my saved bindings with a small edit to the files.

It's also worth noting that every time I changed my controller and customised the bindings I lost the Custom files for the old one.
Lately however FDev have saved dated backups so not so hard to recover them as it used to be. Just not so easy to see which controller they refer to from the names...
A few of our commanders had the same trouble which is why I posted this thread.

I have never ever lost my bindings in over 6 years. I do rename my binds so that I never use "custom" as that is the one that the game overwrites. By using named binds files, the game never has deleted them for me. It clones them, like 2.0 binds file was cloned to give a 3.0 file and Oddity has cloned my in-use Horizons 3.0.binds file (CHProThrottleFighterstick2MFD.3.0.binds) to create a 4.0.binds file (CHProThrottleFighterstick2MFD.4.0.binds).

I assume that because I use the %LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings location the game does it's thing without having to go through your procedure in the ControlSchemes defaults directory(s).

You also mention that you use a variety of controllers, well (as the name might suggest) my binds includes CHPro Fighterstick, CHPro Throttle, 2 Cougar MFDs and a x-box360 controller. (It also used to include CHPro Rudder Pedals but I don't use them any more in Elite.) I have other binds files that contain combinations of the above plus versions that use a Logitech 3D stick and some that use a StreamDeck - all are there available in the drop-down list if I want to use them (assuming I plug in the different items).

So, in summary, you can see why I feel that by not using the %LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings folder you are in danger of confusing others as well as seeming to have made extra work for yourself.
