Newcomer / Intro How to pay off Bounty?

Hi. I was doing a Mission in the Nambal system, to destroy a power plant on a planet. When entering the base I took out a few skimmers and now I have a whopping 400 cr Bounty on my head
I know you can pay a bounty at a station but I'm not sure if I can dock at any of the stations in the Nambal system as each planet and station has a red icon next to their names now (scales of justice kinda) I cant pay it in the Gende system where I picked up the mission. Also I'm now wanted in the Nambal system so I'm guessing that if I enter anywhere there that has security I'm going to get whacked by them!
Can anyone advise me how do I get this Bounty paid please?

To pay off bounties you need to find an Interstellar Factors. You can filter the galaxy map (under services, third tab in the galaxy map navigation bar) to find them, and you will find them at any station in a low security system, or any station controlled by an anarchy faction regardless of system security level.

Yes, if you get scanned while wanted, especially by system security, you will be attacked and probably destroyed, at which point you'll have to pay the bounty (as well as ship rebuy) when you re-spawn, probably at a detention center. Try and find an Interstellar Factors. They will be under contacts in station services at stations that meet the criteria above. :)

You did dirty deeds, and must suffer the consequences. :) Bit harsh, I agree, but tbh, I think it adds new levels of gameplay. We just need to adjust.

You can hardly complain when you set out to deliberately kill innocent skimmers for money. You either need to figure out how to be a good criminal or you need to face the consequences of yur crimes.

Like many types of missions, you can make a lot of money doing skimmer missions if you you use a bit of intelligence, planning and cunning. Basically, you need to figure out ways around the obstacles that you encounter.

It comes even worse if your bounty is on a big ship. Then you probably have to travel far to find an interstellar point with a big starport. :O

What?? Blimey all that just to pay a 400 cr fine!! This Bounty System system needs looking at, its a joke!!

Don't confuse a fine and a bounty!

fine:
  • issued for minor offenses (trespassing within a time limit, minor friendly fire incidents, shooting in a "no fire" zone, smuggling, that kind of stuff)
  • can be paid off at the Authority Contact of the issuing faction
  • Authority Contact is accessible even through the Anonymous Protocol
  • Authority Contacts are (now) also present at Engineer bases

bounty:
  • issued for major offenses (trespassing exceeding the time limit, destroying property, accessing private beacons, kills,...)
  • can be paid off at Interstellar Factors (IF), also known as Broker Network in the system map
  • IF can be found at any station in a system with low or mid security or an Anarchy

Notoriety:
  • issued for killing. One kill = one point
  • degrades at 1 point/2 hours in game
  • prevents paying off bounties at IF

Bugs I've heard about:
  • no authority contact at a station
  • payment of fines doesn't work
  • Notoriety doesn't degrade
  • IF contact doesn't work
  • fine/bounty information not shown on the Transactions tab

Fines and Bounties are linked to the ship. So if you park a replacement ship in a nearby Anarchy (remember that fines or bounties will also lock you out from the shipyards of the issuing factions) and switch to that after committing your crimes, you're again free to go. In the long run, that's probably the cheaper option.
Notoriety, on the other hand, is linked to the CMDR. But if you never intend to pay off those bounties, that doesn't need to bother you that much.

It looks like you need to be a certain distance from the System you incurred the Bounty from in order to pay it off. If you can't turn yourself in and pay it in system.

I had forgotten about that, until I went to an Interstellar Factor about 50 ly away, after going to 9 of them that were to close, and was finally able to pay off my 5,900 cr bounty.

There's no distance requirement. You can pay off bounties at any IF. I bet your problem was that you had notoriety, which you have to wait 2 hours for it to expire before the IF will deal with you. You get notoriety for killing innocent ships - 2 hours cumulative for each one.

Just to point out that the 2 hours per point of notoriety has to be active in game time if you log off the timer stops.

https://inara.cz/ is a good place for looking up interstellar factors. Look under systems/nearest on the menu.

The bounty is for a faction, so you need to go where the faction isn't in control. Other factions dont care..

And, unlike bounties and fines, notoriety degrades even if you're not in the ship you originally picked it up in. So you can park your wanted ship and run a few trade missions while you're waiting for your notoriety to go down, completely safe from any bounty hunters. Only thing is that if you pick up anymore fines or bounties in the other ship you still have to wait for your notoriety to drop before you can pay it off.

Yes bounties and fines are attached to the ship.
Notoriety is attached to the commander.

Guys, this guy was asking the question in 2018. Why are you expecting him to care now? :p

Because the threads aren't auto-locked after a period of inactivity to prevent them from being necro'ed.

Sometimes, it's good to refresh these common threads because lots of new people read them. As there have been a load of newbs recently and combat got a buff to the payouts, I can imagine a lot had a go at bounty farming and quicky got a bounty on themselves. Not knowing how it works, they did the wrong thing, like tried to go to the station to pay it off and kept getting blown up or handed themselves in and ended up marooned on a prison ship. They therefore figured out that combat was a dodgy thing to do and stopped doing it. When they read this thread, it might given them confidence to have another go.

Glad it didn't get necro'd... this is exactly what I did (accidently shot a system authority ship while in combat with a wanted) so went to a station where controlling faction had the bounty. Got jumped, escaped went back silent to pay the fine, ended up in jail)

That's why I was searching for proper method and it led me to this thread, so thanks for resurrecting lol.

There'll be many more after you, unfortunately for them!

well, welcome to 3308 commanders, I also have annoying trespass bounties in Shinartra Desra and am on a hop miles away in horizons just to go back and claim my bounty

This whole process makes many missions too much of a PITA to even consider, yes sure, go there, scan that, kill X, get paid but then add a stage befoe getting paid thats bascially search the galaxy for a compatable IF and go there first is completely useless
