How to play with a friend who only owns the base game?

So I have Elite with Odyssey, but he has "Plain Elite Dangerous" so which option do I have to choose in the Launcher to play with him?

You friend should be able to install "Elite Dangerous: Horizons" on the launcher, this will grant them access to Horizons in Live - if you also select that option (automatically available if Odyssey is installed) then you should be able to play with them.

An alternative would be "Legacy Horizons".
