Assuming you are not having power consumption issues I would suggest using heavier thrusters. B rated are the heaviest and thus have the most integrity (hitpoints) Those light D rated ones are nice but they sure do leave you without thrusters a little too often.

Simply keep your shields up, if you have trouble with it get some cell banks.
