How to Proceed in Elite

Hallo commanders,

I've been lurking for a long while, haven't posted on a forum in ages. I have found myself lately with a bit of an identity crisis about how I want to play Elite in the future. I've been flying an Anaconda for almost four months now I've been able to fully upgrade it and do a good measure of engineering... However... something hasn't felt right about it all this time.

It was the obvious end goal for me, I like doing a lot of things, exploration especially--enough that the other "big three" ships weren't ever something I felt I wanted. Things come up though, I get nostalgic for a time when I flew ships where the cockpit was in the front and they were smaller and I could land more easily and in a fancier/more enjoyable manner. The Anaconda certainly isn't the prettiest ship in the bubble either, and I've always thought that aesthetically at least--not balance wise--it could use having more of its size proportionally dedicated to weapons (larger/more hardpoints) relative to other multipurpose ships like the Python.

Then, as I approach the point where I've engineered all the important parts of the Anaconda that I wanted to get to, I find myself thinking more and more about my long term angle at roleplay in this game. I know that when I'm done engineering I will probably want to dedicate myself to full-time power play or exploration and or maybe even get involved with a player faction (preferably one that also does heavy RP.) In this respect too, I find issues, I guess I always have. I do not feel that my character, Korinne, would be one to command such a large ship as the Anaconda. (about how many crew would it take to operate such a ship anyway, by the way?) Many of the missions, and indeed bounty hunting in general seem to make more sense when done with a ship that isn't quite so large and so apt for trading say, imperial slaves, instead.

So given all these factors and some I haven't detailed, despite the fact that the Anaconda is better in nearly every way except agility, I find myself wanting to return to the Python and perhaps stay there. I've never been one to collect ships as I see people do here, I traded in every ship I flew until I reached the anaconda. I very much like to fly one ship and stick with it (again because of the roleplay implications.) So to go to the Python probably means selling my Anaconda and at least some of its components lest it bother me that I technically have a huge ship just sitting around somewhere.

I am perhaps a little weary of this because of the practical advantages I'm giving up but I increasingly feel that it is necessary. I guess I'm posting here looking for some encouragement that may help me get over the fence on it. Also, while I know this isn't strictly the forum for it, I'm open to recommendations on player factions/roleplay groups. And while I'm here, has anyone ever given significant thought to what it would take to crew these ships? Specifically the Python or Anaconda? Though I'm interested in general as well.

Hopefully I've been coherent enough in typing all of this, I love this game and this seems like a pretty good community. If you've read this far, I appreciate you.

Some suggestions, you can pick one:
1. Adopt a faction. Cultivate and make it expand, like taking care of a plant.
2. Try delve into the mysteries, like the Formidine Rift. Go to Conflux sites.
3. Participate in a CG (especially the trading) and aim to be one of the top 10 CMDRs.
4. Do some risky trading (travelling with full cargo and shieldless, and extra points when done in Open).
5. Complete long range smuggling missions.
6. Aim for rank 5 in power play.
7. Aim for triple elite, or be a King or any highest rank in a superpower.
8. Take a break for now and wait for 2.3.

As an explorer, I can offer some suggestions, but I have no experience or interest in power play.

Many explorers use an Anaconda, but I prefer an Asp Explorer. I really like the extensive view from the cockpit. I've engineered mine to get a jump range of 40-50+ lyrs, depending on configuration. Exploring can get tedious at times, but I've really enjoyed expeditions with groups of like-minded players, such as Distant Worlds and Distant Stars. Take a look at the Elite Explorers forum from time-to-time: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php/117-Elite-Exploration

There should be another Distant Worlds expedition this year, but I haven't seen any concrete plans yet. You could pick an interesting destination and go off exploring or maybe head out to Colonia.

Once the next patch goes live, there will be another reasonable exploration ship, the Dolphin. With engineering, it has a jump range of 40+ lyrs. It will be especially suited to sightseer exploration missions. It's a pretty ship and it flies well. (I've flown it in the beta.)

If you do sell the Anaconda, be sure to store any engineered modules you might like to use again, in the future.

For a long time I only had 1 or 2 ships, but currently, I have 3: The Asp, for exploration and general purpose missions, a Type-9 for cargo carrying CGs, and a Python for cargo when I'm expecting a fight.

That's a tip off to my current goal. Now that I've achieved Elite Exploration, I'm working towards Elite Trading. Eventually, I may try for triple Elite, but combat doesn't interest me that much.

Python is great. I engineered mine and for multi role and I enjoy it a lot. I think it's one of the best ships. The retro interior design and it's shape, it's a classic.

Find some non-credit related goals. Use your Anaconda to keep your credit balance up and in the meantime fly what you enjoy.

I had a similar existential crisis shortly after getting the Anaconda then realised with the 150mil in the bank I could buy and upgrade the 15 smallest ships. I took pretty much one or two a week and had amazing amounts of fun in the sidewinder, Eagle, Courier etc.
Then I went on an 8 month exploration trip in the Conda.... Well, that was optional :p
However, that 750mil credits funded my purchase of most of the other ships so now I have a fleet of everything to swap between as I wish which is nice.

Anyway I'd also advise player groups. I started in the Fuel Rats and have been on and off ever since. Joined a few others for specific events, can highly recommend Elite Racers, Buckyball and Hammers of Slough as three i've tried and enjoyed.

In the end even if it's more logical to take the Anaconda you should always divert if something is more fun, simply because it's a game and that is the primary goal. I'd use it for the profit capabilities and travel capabilities but aside from that fly what you enjoy.

Hopefully this helps give a bit of inspiration... psst, I hear imperial slaves really enjoy the Imperial Clipper for that fast smuggler experience, it's also decent in a fight. :)

I'd say if you sell your conda it could quite easily fetch you enough to fit out an armed trader Python and a fully kitted out ASP for exploring.
With regards to your RP question in flying a conda solo, it is possible but requires a fair few modifications.
You might like to read one of the official novels, written by the great Michael Brookes which contains just that... An Anaconda piloted by a big grizzly bearded fellow all on his own.

Regardless, ships in Elite are more analogous to container ships with a small crew than Naval ships carrying hundreds or even a thousand seamen.

You write like a smart [redacted] all bloody correct spelling, and grammar and paragraphs and like that.

If you got any strategic smarts you should have a yarn with some of folks upstairs at the Thinking Fellers Union Local the AEDC Alliance Elite Diplomatic Corps.

Read some of Schlack's posts for flavour.

The Commies are civilised if you like the red flag - Jane Turner's posts are indicative. Actually any of the Border Coalition groups might suit you (the Mercs of Mikuun or the Winged Hussars though they are Polish at heart) There's a small group called [NULL] that I rate. Cannon give good structure and narrative to exploration based activities.

if you have a background in EVE then the GalCop groups might suit, but I wouldn't.
Same with Empire groups. I used to point folks to the Aisling Reddit as a cautionary example.

python is a strong contender for a 1 ship, as well as a cobra mkIII ... or a cobra mkIV (if you can stand it) or a viper mkIV.

you simply have to ignore your CR balance.

or you have to evolve your character ... how does korinne cope with being rich? sporting an imperial courier now? starting to buy a fleet of small ships, getting a collector?

as for how to proceed ... take some hollidays. make a pilgrimage trading all 127+ rare goods which are ingame. visit the cqc assets ingame like capital docks or military installations. search for listening posts and the places they lead you to...

or join a group that is working the backgroundsimulation. every faction needs experienced medium and small ship commanders, especially if they are based in the outskirts, where large pads are rare.

Without knowing more about your character, it's hard to advise.
But, if you're looking for a combination of style and performance, with the ability to do a little bit of anything, then you might consider taking a look at the Saud Kruger line of ships, specificall: https://coriolis.edcd.io/outfit/orc...2040400mn04B2370nv62i2f.Iw18SQ==.Aw1+gjM3EA==.

The Orca.

Or, if you can hold out until 2.3 - https://coriolis.edcd.io/outfit/orc...2040400mn04B2370nv62i2f.Iw18SQ==.Aw1+gjM3EA==.

The Dolphin.

Both are shown geared toward exploration, but can easily be refit for more specialized use.

Hello CMDR!

I'm in the same boat. Literally. :D
I have an Anaconda, setup exactly how i like, to do pretty much everything at once. She's a beauty, but also more or less invincible in PvE.
I've recently joined PowerPlay, under LYR, but that's just for them missles. :p

I also have two Pythons, because i love them so much. Lol
One is currently undergoing Engineering for lightweight and cool running for Exploration. The other is more or less a mini-conda, more or less invincible, and can do any role. I love them both, and rarely leave them in the hangar for long.
I also have an FDL, but it doesn't get much use these days, my PvE Python and Anaconda are much better for everything, including combat these days.

As for me, what am i doing now?
Well, i go from CG, to CG mostly. I have a few "to-dos" I'd like to do, but not until after 2.3 drops.
Colonia is one of them, and the rift. And getting hyperdicted. Lol

Other than that, I just do day to day things.

Hallo commanders,

I am perhaps a little weary of this.

"Hallo" and then, "weary"?

"Hello", thanks very much, and "wary"

(No, I really do appreciate your command of grammar, but people saying 'weary' where they mean 'wary' is one of my pet peeves. Yes, I deserve whatever I get.)

(Also, 'Hallo'? Who ever said that, since 1840? Certainly no one who went on to say 'weary' when they meant 'wary').

Edit: You can of course be weary (tired) of things, but your original context leaves the reader in no doubt that the word you wanted was 'wary' (aware of possible disadvantages).

Hello Kitty :)

The python needed 7 crew members in FFE, and the Anaconda needed 10. Some interesting descriptions.

I have long stopped correcting people on the Internet.
The only time it matters is when it is important information being divulged. :D

Oh and there are a lot of Europeans/Asians who have ESL on these forums and kudos to them for their remarkable command of the English language.

Kitty, multiplayer in 2.3 is a hoot, so if you get a chance (when it comes out), find a bunch of people and do stuff with them!

Player group means there is always something to do. Pretty sure Antal power play has role players: Pledge Antal Thread

As for the ship situation if you have the credits why not just temperaly break your multiple ship rule to try the python out? That way if you change mind your Anaconder with engineer upgrades is waiting. Failing that just store the modules while you experiment with the Python.
