Newcomer / Intro How to read the System map

Hey

Can anyone explain how to read the System map?

For systems with one star (like Sol) it's pretty obvious. But when they have more than one star and two rows of orbiting planets, where are they in actual space? More specifically how can I fly from the nav beacon on the first star and then find the second or third star?

Yup. when you enter a system its always at the first sun shown up top of the system layout page. from there each planet in line from closest to furthest is how close their orbit is in relation to that first sun, including obstacles like asteroid fields, etc. each planet or item then has its own objects orbiting shown below the planet. just like the sun the further the orbit the lower down the list each object is, so your closest docking port for example, would be off the planet closest to the sun showing a docking port if you are just jumping in. The second sun in a dual star system is very far from the first but works the same way. you should be able to jump to the next star (sun) from the navigation list on your left ships panel, make a note of the name of the star in the systems page then scroll on the ships nav list to find it. lock it as destination, point at it and jump away!

You need to use your discovery scanner to find other objects and "explore them. The better your scanner the further your range. The most advanced scanner will pick up all objects in the instance.

Fly into a system. Scan, See if any new objects pop up, go to your navigation panel and then you can navigate to the objects you discovered.

My questions about the system map.

I will see this

What are the planets oribitng? around X and not a star. What am I missing by this indication?

I use the keyboard but I cannot navigate the system map with it, I have to defer to the mouse, what is up with that?

In that case those 3 planets orbit both stars. If your system was called Betty, normally the top star would be called Betty A, the bottom Betty B and the three planets Betty AB1, Betty AB2 and Betty AB3, the letters after the planet's names indicating which stars they orbit.

There are complicated systems out there with multiple stars, each with their own planets and then further planets which orbit more than one of the stars.

X is the join point with the other X in the System map its just a map connection. All the planets in the string orbit the Sun(Star) All the objects on the vertical string below each planet orbit that planet, NOT the Sun (star)

The X is the barycenter of two other objects. If Body A and body B orbit each other, and Body C orbits that pair, this will show in the system map as Body C orbiting the ''X'' between Body A and Body B

with kudos for Nutter for providing this info.
In short, select the system from galaxy map when already in to select system center.
