How to reduce faction's influence?

I don't think so, it just reduces your standing with them.
I've been working hard at overthrowing the controlling faction in my system and have reduced it's influence significantly by doing missions for all the 'other' factions. In other words there is only 100% influence total in the system so by raising the others, the controlling factions has to drop.
Currently my system has reached civil war, but strangely the controlling faction is not yet involved.

Hello Deadalus1116,

Killing system authorities (assuming same faction), will increase civil unrest (I think it is). Influence always adds up to 100%, so increasing another faction's influence should decrease the target faction's influence.

Only direct way to decrease influence I can think of/seen is to take missions for the faction and follow through on the alternative path - most of these tends to reduce the mission sponsor's influence.

If you want to reduce the influence of a faction, you have to take missions for another faction, read the faction details, which faction is at the opposite side.

What happens when you choose a mission for the opposing faction (or near-by system's primary control faction)
--- and then Abort the mission and discard it.
Rep changes? Is this an overlooked exploit to gain rep?

Only loose rep for the faction, you abandoned, and for Emprie/Federation, too. Be careful with abandon missions.
From neutral you can go down to hostile :)

You can reduce a factions influence by taking their missions and failing them or completing the alternate mission that is often offered.
