How to reduce the screen door effect

Screen door effect, reducing it.

I posted in the old very long Oculus Rift thread a while back about trying out different materials to reduce the screen door effect.

I was finding I was getting more bothered by this the more I used the rift, I know some dont have a problem at all but there are also some out there that hate it with a vengeance.

I have not found a complete solution, what I have done is reduce it to the point where it no longer bothers me. Its still there but its just less noticeable.

I went through many threads and reddits looking for a reasonable solution but most were either too drastic (glueing a sandwich back directly to the screen of the DK2!!! ) or too ghetto (stretching a plastic sheet over the lens hole and then fitting the lens on top). I settled on a matte screen protector for the galaxy note 3, added bonus is these are really cheap and if you have a note 3 they are really good anti glare screen protectors. It does require you to take your DK2 apart, which is pretty scary, but only so you can get to the screen. There is a rubber casing around the screen that its possible to get off too but I left that there and just cut the screen protector to size. It doesnt need to be neat, just make sure there are no bubbles or dust particles in the centre of the each side and you wont notice bubbles round the edge. Having a screen protector on there also makes it less of a problem to stick a cloth in there and wipe off dust.

Like I said it doesnt remove the screen door effect, probably lessens it bt 50% or so. I am happy with it and all those that I showed it to that had used the rift before commented that it was much better.

The screen protector I used was this one http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/200967430564?_mwBanner=1

How easy was it to fit?
its kinda tempting

Very easy if you are comfortable taking it apart. Just be careful with the ribbon cable s you remove the front cover. I did not remove the board from the screen though, no need, just lie it down flat. The rubber screen surround can be tugged out with the board in place. Take your time squeezing it back in after putting the screen protector in place.

It made huge difference in the SDE and replaced it with a very fine patter that you barely notice.

Also, if you are going the Oculus Thrift route, i.e using your smartphone as a VR display, the Galaxy Note 4's quad HD display seriously reduces the screen door effect. I was using the Galaxy Note 2 before for the display and the screen door effect was very noticeable. I still played, but reading text was very tough. The Note 4 display, along with changing HUD colors to cyan helped tremendously. The phone's penttile display has more green pixels than the red or blue ones, so you get more resolution. I believe this applies to the Oculus Rift's display also. Hope this helps someone have a better VR experience.

I have been considering this mod for a while. I'll do this once my protectors arrive.
Change HUD to green for better readable text btw.

I posted this months ago on the UK part of iRacing.com and thought I would post it here in case it helps someone on ED

Well, looks like I have gotten of the screen door effect SDE on my Rift with the compromise of a little bit of clarity.

First took the rift apart, fairly easy and follow this website

This Link for Tear Down

Underneath it is just a Samsung Note 3 screen and so I put one of these on it.

Ebay Link to a screen protector

I used some alcohol to help clean and put the cover on the screen and put the whole lot back together. It took about 30mins all in all and of course can be removed as not permanent.

The results, well the SDE is gone. Replaced with a fine pattern that is not as noticable as you are looking at the protector quite close up. A slight loose in clarity, but overall, it works for me and will be staying in place.

Thought I would give the SRF with rifts guys a heads up this as it has been mentioned elsewhere on the Rift threads and got lost under the usual barrage of post trolls.

For me it works and cost less than £2 delivered.

Works a charm for ED and have been using it since Gamma when I joined ED

I did this mod about 2 days after getting dk2. I wouldn't say it changes your life but there's a definite improvement with regards to SDE.

Quite easy to do, just take your time and make sure everything is clean before applying the screen protector.

Screen door efect mod with a matte screenprotector

Just modded my DK2 with a matte screen protector for a Galaxy 3 Note.

Result: Less screen door effect. Not totally gone but still less. It preserved sharpness while I was expecting a bit of blur.

Cost me the fortune of 3 dollars and 15 minutes of work. Glad I did it :)
