How to reverse an "Unfriendly" rep status with the Federation?

Somehow I got myself an "unfriendly" status with the Feds (prolly had to do with some stolen goods poor smuggling...) and since then I cant take any missions available in Fed systems due to not having enough reputation with most Fed orgs issuing missions.

I have turned to do bounty hunting to clean Fed space of undesireable elements in an effort to clean my name but after a large amount fo such bounty hunting nohting seems to change in my rep status... Is bounty hunting a correct way to increase rep with a faction? If not, how else can I reverse my rep with the Feds if I cant accept any missions? Private trading?

Bounty hunting should help, but I've got the same problem. I think I got the unfriendly rep in the first few hours of Gamma on Saturday by being too trigger-happy with WANTED ships that were federal aligned, stupidly not waiting for them to fire first. I am lucky and can still take missions with federation-aligned factions, but have been bounty hunting and doing missions for ages, but am still unfriendly with the main fed rep. I'm even friendly with several federation-aligned reps and am also well into mostly harmless, with most kills having fed bounties. So my feeling is that fed rep loss is very fast but gain is extremely slow (or bugged).

:p I could put in a good word with the Feds for you, meet me just outside Freeport with a cargo hold full of gold and i'll see what I can do....

At present Bounty Hunting doesn't increase your rep at all.
If anything, it lowers it when you kill wanted ships that are aligned with the Federation - this can be seen in the contacts panel once you have passively scanned a ship.

I assume the theory is that turning in the bounty should raise your rep more than the killing of that ships makes it go down, but that doesn't yet happen.

There are plenty of factionless / independent ships that have bounties though, stick to those for now.

I didn't realise all that until I made it to Hostile with the Federation.
There are still missions I can take, but mostly poor ones.
Normal trading raises rep and isn't tied to your rating, as does mining.

I don't think black market trading does anything to rep either.

Best way to learn is to look at your rep panel before making any transaction.
You will see a small Down Red arrow or Up Blue arrow next to the faction in question depending how your rep was affected.

I took about thirty five high pay bounty hunting missions at around the same time, then boosted myself into a station wall on take off, failing them all simultaneously. This killed my rep, but after two days of crappy missions I'm more or less back to where I was.
