You can just buy the Sidewinder if it's for sale in the shipyard. You won't get all your money back but you will get some back.

EDIT: And now I am DANGEROUS...

I had to use the self destruct feature to "get rid of mine", since there was no shipyard in any of the stations I could travel to.

It's a pretty efficient method of throwing away ingame credits.

Ive not traded any ships yet in beta but from PB you get 90% back from the ship value. let it be upgrade or downgrade.
If you have equipped your eagle whit weapons or other stuff. sell them off first. those items wont count toward the ship value. And you will loose all your upgrades and money you spent on them.

Just visit a station (shipyard) that sell a sidewinder.
