How to scan for plant life?

Can someone explain to me if the scanner is working now?
There were problems with the scanner the last time I played (a few months ago)
How do I see if there is plant life on a planet or moon? I've scanned probably 20 today and don't know what to look for obviously because I just can't find any.

The FSS will tell you if there is any life on a body, not all bodies have life, if you are scanning with the FSS and not seeing any, that's just the luck of the draw.
