Newcomer / Intro How to scan 'Lagrange' (class 1 gas giant) in the Alpha Centauri system?

Newbie Alert!

So it obviously has been scanned before (Borg184 being the first to do so), but i can't seem to get close enough to it in Super Cruise (so my Detailed Surface Scanner has the range to fire the probes at it) before it kicks me out into normal space flight, and then i can't use the scanner and probes. I've tried twice now and tried to be really gentle with the speed controls to find a sweet spot on range from the Gas Giant (if it exists), but so far it is the last remaining body in the Alpha Centauri system i need to scan.

I have an Asp X with 5D scanners and i suspect a generic Detailed Surface Scanner (1|) that i don't think i can upgrade?

I've scanned all other planets (including the smaller blue Gas Giant 2071 AC3), so i do know how to use the scanner, the game just seems to not want to let me?!

Any suggestions welcome (and yes i did search the internet for an answer but this seems not to be a common concern).

Try approaching from a different direction as it sounds like you are dropping because of rings - nothing else should stop you getting close enough for DSS probes.

OK Ignore that, it seems it has no rings. Sorry

Good luck

Thanks for the tip on rings (this one has none i think, but i'll file the info for another situation). Ok third times a charm.

This time my surface scanner came online (blue instead of red) and i was able to fire a probe from far out (0.69ls) so scanning commences  I think it was due to travelling too fast in Super Cruise perhaps, as this range was much further out. A newbie explorer mistake no doubt. Thanks for the suggestion Para Handy.

Yes you have to pay close attention to the scanner message and throttle down as soon as it changes from Out of Range to Too Fast.

To be honest I find all planetary approaches need to be carried out at a slower speed than approaching a station, instead of the 6 seconds to target I usually go with 10 or 12 seconds which is achieved with a 50% throttle button or setting the throttle marker to the bottom of the blue region.

7 sec is fine for scanning with DSS. Just slow down when under 1 LS (for bigger planets, when under 2 or 3 LS).
Usually for landing too, the final couple LS at 8 sec if you want to be sure.

Now all i need to do is figure out what to do with the '1 tonne' of Hutton Mugs i bought, it seems like a large quantity to keep as a memento (unless a mug is just a super dense heavy object!) ;)

Hutton mugs are Rare Goods. So you have 1 unit of them, not one mug. Unless you have a Carrier and can keep them forever in your personal storage, they are best traded - or else they will be forever be in your hold! Fly around 200LY from Alpha Centauri and you will find they sell for around 15K profit. Same for the Alpha Centauri Gin (?) .

All rare goods, usually distinguished by having the name of the station/world/systemin their name, sell at an increasing price the further you get from their origin up to a distance of about 175Ly at which point the price stabilises at the 10-20k credits per ton level.
There are limits to how much of each one you can have on board and how much you can buy in one go those limits vary with each different item and are influenced by system state.
Some of the rare goods particularly the more recreational ones can be illegal in some systems earning you a fine if scanned carrying them.

There was a challenge a couple(?) of years or so ago now where the Hutton Truckers (a player faction) and friends collected Hutton Mugs with the object of delivering 1 tonne to every station in the game the effort was most impressive.

Ah yes i have 19 tonnes of Centauri Mega Gin, so i will go as far away as possible to sell it as per aRJay's tips, assuming i don't drink it in the meantime.

I hadn't encountered the gentleman before.

Reminiscent of Hoffnung's recitation "The Barrel".

There are a few of Cecil's "offerings" from Hutton Orbital Radio on Soundcloud

... and there is also an HCS "companion" voicepack which I find rather amusing occasionally. (All proceeds from the sale of which go to Special Effect.)
