Create another game mode called solo mode where the player can take part in the same activites as the main game.
Create another mode called private group where the player can take part in the same activites as the main game but with a select group of friends.
I think this will slove all the problems with grieving. If you don't want to get shot at by another player you can play in solo mode or private with a few players that you trust.
