How to spot a Pirate?

Wanted is clear enough, but I'm having a hard time telling a pirate from a random space schmo. Frustrated I fragged a few random 'clean' pilots and what do you know, they happened to be pirates. Are there better scanners that can detect eye patches with more precision?

Cheers

Trafalgar Law explained it in another thread:

Pirates can be identified in any of three ways. First you can check which minor faction they belong to, factions with words like gang, mafia, posse, pirate etc. in their names will usually count for this mission. The second method is anyone who asks you for cargo is a pirate and will count. The third method is to target their subsystems (default 'y') and see if they have piratical gear, in my experience those with one or more of the following pieces of kit, FSD interdictors, cargo scanners, hatch breakers will usually count for the mission. Hope that helps.
.
You don't need to be in USS, but can also be in nav beacons or extraction sites.

Yep. But I have noticed that pirates that interdict you in supercruise tend to not count for these missions for some reason.

NPCs are discernible by their comms chatter when you scan them with the K-Warrant scanner [Nav Beacons], pull them out of supercruise [FSD Interdictor] and Pirates scan you [Nav Beacons].

Pirates: "Let's see what you're carrying then!" - "Ugh, nothing useful."

Traders [Pulled out of SC or when scanned using K-Warrant]. Some/most will run away when scanned, since it's a hostile action: "Please God no! I only have my passengers!" or "I have no interesting cargo!" Something like that.

Bounty Hunters: "I have enough trouble with the police without you getting in my way!"

That is pretty much all paraphrased, but you get the idea :) I hope this helps!

I found that when pirates scan me and find no cargo, they won't engage me. So now I've taken to carrying some tasty cargo as bait.

Awesome thanks!

I have the same problem with authorities. I had a mission to kill two of them, and only the ones in USS or Nav Beacon counted. I think it's a bug related to interdicting ship.
