How to start elite with non steam rift?

I had the same issue. In the graphic options under 3D select the "HMD and headphones" option, then re-launch ED (quit the launcher too). The Oculus store has to run all the time, at best, before you start the ED launcher.

Just to add - i had the same problem and did all these things and was still stuck. Turned out i had to have the rift plugged into the same graphics card as the monitor.

This should only be considered as a last-ditch effort, but I was having all kinds of trouble getting ED going on the DK2. I finally got to the point you're at (waiting for the elitedangerous32.exe to load) and could not make it work.

I did a fresh install of Win 7 x64 and it was 1. install Oculus Home, 2. install ED, 3. Play (ok, 4. you'll have to go into the graphics menu of ED and chose HMD/headphones in the 3D settings). I may have gunked up my system with numerous install/uninstalls of Oculus Home and a crapload of other work-arounds in an attempt to get it working when I didn't know what the hec I was doing.

Remember, this is a last-ditch effort, but it solved it for me.

Edit: you got it going. I'll leave this up for posterity.

And suddenly... my problem makes sense. +Rep, good sir.

Pre-Oculus rig was GTX970 SLI with a 3 monitor span. I plugged the Rift into the second card, turned off SLI. As soon as I turned on HMD (<anything>) it would lose its mind and go blank-screen on me. In hindsight, it kind of makes sense. It probably doesn't know to render the display mirror to a separate graphics card...

I've got a DisplayPort-->HDMI converter arriving tomorrow so I can run the Oculus *and* all three monitors off the 970 simultaneously. We'll see if that plays nicer.

This was particularly frustrating, though. I had this working last night, and just hadn't realized *WHY* it was working. As a tech guy... I'm a little embarrassed that I didn't figure that out all by myself. SLI just always magically worked. Wasn't thinking in my excitement and frustration.
