How to start engineering?

So I've been away from the game for several months, work and just taking a break from the game. I've loaded it up and so far I really love the enhanced graphics along with the new audio. I also just purchased a LG UtraWide 34 inch monitor. The moment I loaded up Elite and I was sitting in the bridge of my Anaconda, I thought, wow, worth every penny for that monitor. The graphics looks amazing.

Okay, onto Engineering, I've finally found the tab to access them, but now I need to get Meta-Alloy for one of them. Where would I find this? Is this the barnacles from before?

I also have encountered a few NPC that have attacked, after a battle, they drop a lot of cool stuff now. Only the stuff seems to last for a few minutes then vanish? On one ship, I didn't have collectors so I was doing it the old fashion way, collected 4 items and under 3 minutes everything just vanished. Strange.

Any help with starting engineers would be appreciated. Thanks.

Farseer is the usual first choice to unlock because increased FSD range makes everything better. You can buy a meta alloy at Darnielle's Progress, a planetary base in Maia.

Awesome, thank you!

Another quick question, when you do the unlocks for an item, like a better FSD, can you get that on every ship you own? I guessing that each time you would have to go gather all the material again.

It's the module that you upgrade, not the ship. So yeah, upgrade every time.

Congrats on the 34" monitor. I've had my Dell 34" for almost a year now and absolutely love it.

If you don't have one, you want either and Asp or a Python to mod up to the max ASAP. Doing missions is the only way to get some commodities and a long range mission runner is an essential part to success.

Work on FSD, then shield mods first to help against the recent AI improvements that can be lethal if you're not modded up a bit. L3 thruster mods would be the next priority for the submit and run that is still the best defense against interdictions.

The goal should be getting to a fully Grade 5 modded Python. That makes the rest of it pretty easy.

Also use the Inara site to plot your way through the Engineers.

Welcome back

Be careful out there, it may be a lot more dangerous now compared to when you left.

You should also checkout the engineers section on the forums, there is a excellent data base listing all engineer components you will need for upgrades.

It's all there at the Inara site linked in my previous post.

You can look at each Engineer separately, look up any component to see what it's used for and how best to find it, or look up any blueprint for any mod and see what you need and which engineer(s) can do that mod.

It's really well organized and accurate and everything you need in one place.

Discalimer: I have no affiliation with nor am I a member of Inara

Most of the useful information has already been posted but one small tip. Be careful when visiting the Dweller. His base seems to be permanently on the dark side of the planet and is surrounded by hills. I would recommend a relatively steep approach to the base.

Inara is your friend.

I would be remiss if I did not warn you about the issues with Commodities required by Engineers.

1) If you are carrying any of these items (Modular Terminals, Magnetic Emission Coils, Nanobreakers, etc.) you will attract pirates by the cartloads. So DON'T keep them until you are actually ready to do an upgrade. Get all the other materials and data first, and only then get the commodities. Some of them can be purchased. Some are only from mission awards. Then immediately take them to the Engineer and do your upgrade.

2) Any ship you wish to upgrade needs at least 4T of cargo space. Before you start engineering, visit all your ships and install at least that much cargo hold space. Otherwise you can get stuck, unable to transfer to the ship because it can't take on the cargo you have.

It's quite a learning experience, and a lot of stuff you need to do for these upgrades. But they are so worth it.

The stuff you get from destroyed ships goes to your 'material' inventory, if you scan wakes, or ships in SC, you get stuff that goes into the 'data' part of the inventory. You must first 'unlock' an engineer after learning about him/her. Once this is done you can start modding, and the more you do it the better mods are unlocked. You must mod every module independently, but with module storage coming you can swap modules around your ships if they fit.

So my modules are A rated at (I think ) Felicity I see upgrades but they say 6C or some such not A. So do I need to find an engineer upgrading A rated modules ?

Okay, so I finally managed to unlock an Engineer. I ended up going to Tod "The Blaster" Mcquinn first as I was closer to him. I've modified 3 of my multi-canons. The only thing I'm not sure about is when it does the depressing spin of the "experimental" laugh in your face part. Is this just an added bonus on top of what you're getting with the change in stats?

I know I've seen a several post about the random factor and now I'm starting to understand the problem here. I was in a great mood, when I load up and tried out the Engineer's part of the game, now I'm just angry and frustrated that I went through all my materials (15 nickel) not to get one "extra" bonus what ever. If FD is going to make us spend hours collecting, why the hell would the throw that little kick in the head of frustration at the end?

I'm beginning to think the the people of FD have never actually played an Online game before in their life...

Guess I won't spend much time on this. To bad it was almost fun.

Certain of the 'special effects' are useful. And if you don't manage to just get a lucky roll for the effect you want, you can always buy it by spending some of your reputation with that Engineer. Of course then you have to earn the rep back, but that's pretty easy to do by just doing a lot of level 1 mods. You don't even have to keep them, and the materials are easy to come by.

This part is frustrating, it's very rare that you get an experimental effect. So don't be too worried about it. You can still get them by burning two levels of reputation with the engineer. This sounds harsh, but a level just takes 3 goes at any of the highest mods you can do. You will be throwing materials, data and commodities away soon enough. A very few are hard to get.

Yes, they will upgrade any class of module. So you don't have to find another Engineer for that.

Qohen and bad-robot have threads on reddit that list the upgrades and requirements for each engineer. The materials required may be out of date, but the rest of it should still be applicable.

Welcome to Engineers :D

A small tip: during the generation part, you can click or press space and it will give you the result without the animation. Saves time, because you are going to be doing this often for the mods you want. :D
