How to succeed at "find and kill pirate" missions

OK,

So, I'm shifting gears to focus more on combat missions, and I need some help. I'm receiving 6 figure missions to find a pirate, that is known to travel in 3-4 systems. I' can't find the guy, after traveling to all three systems. I tried hitting the nav beacons and unindentified sources, but no success. I even traveled to an extraction site, where I racked in a few kills of other wanteds. But still not the pirate I'm searching for. I feel like I'm missing something obvious here.

Not sure if it matters, but I'm in a Viper with a BDS and KWS.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Only USS. Usually one of the first USS you hit in the mission-listed systems will be a hauler telling you the exact system. Go there, and slow to 30km/s and hit up every USS you see. After 10 minutes or so you should see him. Sometimes immediately, sometimes at 9:59 .... Luck of the draw.


You DO have the firepower to take down an Elite Anaconda, right?

If it is a specific target (which it sounds like) do what CmdrKull said.

If it's one of the "kill a bunch of pirates" missions, you can tell which ships are pirates because they have cargo scanners.

I once did this for rank progression and the only pirates were in USS where you had attackers and haulers, usually 2 attackers and 1 or 2 haulers. And they only counted when they were wanted in Empire (did a kill mission for Empire ranks).

Other than for rank progression i'd never pick up these quests since reward/time is bad. Just go to a excavation site and kill wanted's. A lot faster and more rewarding than Nav Beacons or USS camping if you get good stuff like Cobras in there.
