How To (Sugestions Please)

So I was thinking of going to an unexplored area and just trying to get as many 1st discovered's in the area as I can. My question is what would be the best way to do this so that I do not spend a lot of time backtracking or on multiple system visits , I am just looking to do this in the most proficient way possible. Any and all tips hints or straight up plans would be greatly appreciated.

As always thanks in advance and fly safe CMDR's o7

The way I do it is to basically pick a sector that is relatively unexplored and then just go onto to systems in that sector; focussing mostly on K, G and F stars as they are usually the highest paying.

When I'm doing a survey, I find that with a high-jump-ranged ship, I can visit stars inside a D boxel in sequence without needing to make many jumps between them. So ALICE AB-C D0, D1, D2, ... Dn in a row.
Thank you Jackie, sorry for my ignorance but could you give me a breakdown on how you do this (i.e. route planning etc..)?

Basically, head in any direction (except maybe directly towards the core and colonia) and move a few 100ly up/down from the plane and you'll be getting 90%-100% untagged systems after about 2000-3000ly.

If you really want to find an under-explored area or investigate a specific sector I suggest:
a) use EDD's 3D map (as mentioned above), which will show you all systems known to EDSM, which should represent an area's popularity quite well
b) use the following sector map, basically showing the same as EDD, just on a per-sector basis: https://cim.sotl.org.uk/elite-dangerous/

Good luck and report back on what you find out there!

Thanks Redfox. I have made it to a pretty much unexplored area and now want to ensure I discover as many systems in the area as I can (one big cluster of systems with my name on them), as Jackie called it I want to survey a sector (area). I now need to know how to plan my route etc as efficiently as possible, so as to avoid wasted time doubling back or going through the same system several times. I have never done an exploration trip such as this, it has always been to a specific destination and back so my galaxy map reading and route planning skills are fairly basic.

If you are just trying to survey anything and everything, in most places in the galaxy, it will not matter how you go about doing the survey as far as efficiency goes, as there are literally millions of systems in each sector. Even the extreme high, low, and in between arm sectors still have tens of thousands of systems.

I am currently surveying a cluster of CN class carbon stars that is about 500ly across. I have bookmarked as many as I could until I ran out of bookmarks, and am zig zagging back and forth across in a star type pattern to maximize the number of other systems I hit in between, as well as minimizing the chance of hitting one I had already been to. So far, I have honked over 1000 systems in this area, and have yet to hit one I had already been to.

I think you can filter your Galaxy map to just unvisited systems (by yourself), switch to economy plotting and just zig-zag your cluster :)

There's a setting on your star map the says something like "visited & not visited". Meaning ones you've personally visited. Looking for star types in nebula I would sometimes accidentally visits the same star. Little irritating.

Ah.....somebody just posted this info when I was trying to type. Stupid iPhone. Oh well

If you don't want to visit the same system more than once you can just go to the galaxy map and using the map view you can select in "filter by colour" the option visited stars. You can just leave both visited and not visited and look at the colour or filter out "visited" systems.

Thanks for the input CMDR's.... I will use the visited system filter and tag as many as I can in the area. Thanks for the suggestions!!!
