Newcomer / Intro How to tell who or what killed you?

Just started last night, got interdicted by something, submitted and tried to run and jump away as I've read was better to do, but I was torn down in less than 5 seconds so I didnt even have time to see what was shooting at me, just saw you were killed by xxxx. When you are killed by a player is their name always displayed as CMDR soandso when they kill you or does it just say their name with no CMDR? I don't know if a player killed me or an NPC.

If you were killed by a player, his name will be prefixed by CMDR in the 'killed by' screen, unless things have changed, it's been a very long time since another CMDR killed me, since I'm a professional coward very gifted at asserting the tactical situation at all times.

Yeah as above players always have the cmdr prefix, be aware you can use the "next hostile target" key to see who is interdicting you as soon as they start tethering. Usually I use this to decide if I fight/submit depending on their rating and ship type and player/npc.

So enemy NPCs have names like salassjir and that kind of junk? I think the name of what killed me was similiar. I seriously had zero time to react to what was happening to me because I don't have any muscle memory as I have like 2 hours of game time. I submitted to interdiction, put full pips in sys, and tried to boost away, but with 3 hits I was on fire and dead the next all in about 5 or so seconds. Granted I was in the free ship which I'm sure is garbage, but I was like 1 system away from the default start.

Is that a thing? Are there lots of NPC interdictions in the starting or adjacent to starting systems that just wreck noobs or what?

Yeah, NPC's are named after kickstarter backers or player names to make them feel a bit more real.

The interdictions are not deliberately higher but every system is the same, there are starting systems but they are only different because of the players starting there, in mechanics there's no difference. The increased number of players may lead to more NPC's there (not sure) but aside from that it isn't deliberately weighted against you :)

Yeah you did the right thing, in the sidewinder sometimes it' is just impossible by nature of it being a poorly upgraded tiny ship (as it should be really). The whole zero time to react does sound a bit like it could be a bug as even the biggest ships should give you at least 10 seconds or so... Although a direct hit with a huge plasma accelerator can wreck almost any small ship it hits.

Don't sweat it at the start, I took a good week to get used to the game and start making money before resetting my save and taking that knowledge to advance properly. Won't be long before you get a Cobra III and can turn the tables a bit, the learning curve to get to there is a bit like a brick wall recently though as the AI has been made much more effective and closer to how a real player would fight :)

Keep in mind that the starter Sidewinder is free. Even if you were to throw some upgrade at it, it's still cheap to replace. I know as a new player it may not seem cheap, but believe me, once you start doing million credit missions, bounties, and trades, you'll look back at the early days and chuckle. So, try treating every death in the early stage as a free (or cheap) respawn. Use this time to practice your flying techniques.

Since you've already read about submitting and running, here are a few other hints that'll hopefully help you:

  • If you started in LHS 3447, try moving to another system, such as Eravate. The stations in LHS 3447 are ridiculously far from the star so you end up spending a lot of time in supercruise, where interdictions can occur.
  • Try using Mine Launchers on your weapon mounts. Currently this seems to be very useful in aiding running away.
  • Use Chaff Launcher and Point Defense on your utility mounts. They'll also aid you in running away.

Good luck, CMDR.

Cool thanks guys. Its nice to not give a darn and just hang it out there in the free sidewinders and I'm sure it could have been a few more seconds than that as panic seems to cause time distortion. It was like bang, 2 rings of shield gone, bang last ring and sparks, bang lots of fire and the computer is screaming, *splodey* lulz. All while I'm going am I boosting? I hit boost, I should be boosting away, how far away is far enough? uh oh gonna ded.

edit: another question, were all of the AI across all levels improved? For example, is it supposed to take 5+ minutes of loopwars to kill another little ship with a harmless rating for something like a kill 2 of x faction missions? That seems like a big time investment for a little reward most times.

I believe FD is looking at adjusting the AI skills at lower levels.

Regarding boosting, not all ships have the same top speed. Unfortunately, a Sidewinder with non-upgraded thrusters can't necessarily outrun everyone. A common tactic when faced with a faster ship (which in your case is probably most ships) is to dump chaff to confuse any gimbal or turret weapons, turn Flight Assist off, flip 180 degrees at your enemy, and boost straight at him and do a flyby. Yes, you'll likely take a faceful of lasers, but hopefully the chaff will help. Since shielding is the same all around, it doesn't matter if you take it in the face or take it in the behind. However, by flying past him going the other way, he now has to turn around, which will buy you some precious seconds.

Flight Assist, if you don't know, is the system that makes the flight model feel like you're flying an airplane. With Flight Assist turned off, it will feel more like flying in space with no air resistance. So by turning FA off, you can flip your ship around without making an arc. You would instead be drifting backwards if you flip 180 degrees around. This means the NPC won't be able to follow behind you since there's no turning arc to follow. To turn Flight Assist on or off, you can set it as a toggle or as "while holding down a key" in your key mapping.
