How to trigger an expansion?

So I’m working on optimising my bounty hunting system and would like to trigger a faction to expand into the mission system. What’s the quickest way to trigger a successful expansion?

You need to get the faction to expand over 75%.
This is easiest in:
- low traffic systems
- low population systems
- systems with few factions currently present

A mix of bounty hunting, trade, exploration and missions for the faction you want to expand is more effective than focusing on a single activity.

Quickest, all things being equal is probably bounty hunting to boost the controlling faction you want to expand, dumping exploration data is good too, or both plus trade & missions if you have time. Get their local influence in the system you want them to expand from over 75% then a couple of weeks later they will have an expansion attempt.

This is where it gets fiddly. If you want that faction to expand into a particular target system you'll need to make sure it's the ideal candidate by either being the nearest with 6 or fewer factions present, or have a non-native faction at the lowest influence of all non-natives in nearby systems to trigger an invasion.

If you are unopposed & in a quiet region it's a nice little project, if other players are around it can get incredibly grindy ;)

Good luck!

Hmm. If there’s a system with 6 factions in expansion range but another that’s full but closer, which one will it go for?

The one with 6 factions.

The order is:
- ones with 6 or fewer factions that this faction hasn't previously retreated from, closest first
- ones with 6 or fewer factions that this faction has previously retreated from, closest first
- ones with 7 factions, with a suitable non-native target faction, weakest target first

Bear in mind a system with 6 factions in it right now might be expanded into by another faction before you can get the faction you want into it. Directed expansions aren't easy, there are lots of factors to take into account & even large, experienced player groups don't always get it right every time :)

Also keep an eye on other nearby 6 factions systems, if another faction retreats out of it it'll jump to the front of the queue.

Happened to me recently, wasn't keeping my eye on the ball, ruined a couple of weeks work.

Luckily, I’d probably not have an issue with that - I’m aiming to get a faction in the system for mission generation, so don’t much mind who unless they’re anarchists.

Question: Do expansion missions have any impact on hastening the completion of an expansion?

I recently picked up a few missions from the faction I'm supporting, and looks like since the faction is in Expansion state, these missions are now tagged with "expansion" in the mission title. I'm wondering if this has any special relevance beyond the normal rewards (REP, INF, CR, mats, etc).

no, once an expansion is triggered from a system, that system will expand, and timeframe is fixed.

i recommend the thread on expansions in the bgs subforum: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/expansions-bgs-guide-best-current-thinking.424895/

As goemon says, no these missions don't expedite the expansion. They can be seen as text changes to a normal mission type if that makes sense. Once over the trigger threshold it takes the standard (variable) timeframe!
