How to turn someone away from Elite

Well had a friend over tonight to show them Elite. Left Beagle 2 on a trade run and was taken out by a griefer. Needless to say that left such a poor impression on my friend it is doubtful we will see them in the game.

So for the griefer that was a Beagle 2 tonight, good job. You just proved why solo is a better way to play rather than open if one is to play at all.

I disagree that solo is a better way to play. Perhaps you should've introduced your friend to the combat scenarios instead. I doubt that it was the griefer's fault, just because they wanted to play it the way they wanted. You can't expect to go on a multiplayer game and hope that everyone's nice to you.

Maybe stating the obvious but did you also explain to him that it was a beta and that the game mechanics were in reasonably early stages of development? Also did you show him the solo game to actually demonstrate it a bit more or did you throw up your hands in exasperation and immediately turn it off?

No disrespect meant but it seems a little bit of a fickle attempt at a demonstration?

And what if you would have been destroyed by NPC? Should ED be absolutely safe? If you perform a trade run no one should attack you?

Sounds like you were taken by surprise, how were you killed? Elite is a game of consequences, not of artificially stopping someone from taking action. While we have more features in, they're still quite a bit more to come as well as balancing it all out, but PVP is or the anger won't be nerfed.

"Don't take more than you can afford to lose". Be prepared mentally to lose it all, just a run of bad luck could have you using the creditors to get back on your feet when playing the full game.

No disrespect taken or extended.

Yes I explained it is beta and no I did not quit throwing my hands up in the air and yes I plan to play some more. I then showed them solo game and the group play options and how I would recoup the 300k it cost me. At the end of the day, one must admit, first impressions have a remarkable way of effecting people.

I thought the game mechanics were already in place so was not sure how effective they are and thought I would send a post on it. However if you are saying that those mechanics for griefing will be out later, well that is a different story.

I've been pirating beagle all night tonight but I always message people to drop their cargo. If someone tells you to drop it or die they probably mean it.

If they didn't give you a warning then I guess it sucks to be you. Never fly something you can't afford to lose.

can we please stop this greefing nonsense. if you dont want a other person to shoot you, then go play solo. In solo a NPC will "greef' you. Happy now?

Nah - early days mate - I feel for you - I got ganked with a fully loaded hauler about 12km away from the station by an NPC eagle - 50k of my hard earned pennies down the gurgler... I had to turn it off to calm down haha.

Just got of the launch tube, and must have just cleared the no fire zone if I had at all and then got hit. First salvo stripped shields and into the hull. Started to head towards station and second round of hits, I was gone. To me not a big loss as I can recoup.

I have a complaint in the other direction, at no time while trading have I been threatened by any player or non-player ship. I fly fast even while docking and undocking, but in my opinion trading is too safe and dull at the moment. Even when "interdiction" occurs, there's no danger whatsoever, it's just a small delay while run away and charge the super cruise. Anyway now I have some money in the bank and I'm going looking for trouble, so it will not be dull any longer.

I have yet still to experience this type of griefing/pirating ... whatever you want to call it. (Yes I'm always on open play)

Maybe it my time zone and the time I'm on.

OK I'm going put a challenge out to all you psychopath pirates/murders. Here are my times in UTC (Google it if you don't know what it is)

07:00 - 08:30

I was feeling the same way. So, thinking others felt like us, I bought a Viper, loaded it for bear, and decided to put the fear in Haulers and L6's alike. I never fired a shot, just stalked and cargo scanned but boy did they run for their lives.

Speaking which, how does mass locking other players work? In mutual combat zones, and when I was scaring traders, even though I was right on their tail they were still able to jump away.

P.S. Do to an unfortunate, lets call it a "thruster malfunction," I lost my Viper to an Anaconda's main thrust nozzle. I guess the insurance company didn't like that as they only offered me a Sidewinder. So I'm back in my L6 to try and recoup the 600k or so I had invested in that Viper. lol

Well you're lucky you haven't been attacked just outside the station, plenty people have including myself.
Not been shot down personally but it sure gets exciting/annoying when your unarmed and the station defences do jack and your in a trader hauling fish!

To some extent, I think that is a good thing as well, since your friend also get to see the harsh side of the game, not just the good side.

This will help your friends do a better choice to play or not, instead of complaining later. What I meant here is true frustration and dislike for such gameplay.

I do not believe anyone who do not complain (or maybe swear) a bit when they get shoot down regardless who/what the attacker is. At least I admit I do, since it does waste my previous effort, no matter the reason. :D

But if they do not mind after seeing this and still play, they will stay in this game longer than "being kept in the dark". Well, to some extent, :p
