I made a short video on how to join your friends anywhere in deep/real space.

This can be done using the "low-power FSD wakes" left in super-cruise from your friends ship. NPCs and other online players also leave wakes as well.

Low-power wakes are always left in super-cruise from simple disengages, interdictions, USS (Unidentified Signal Sources), Missions, and various other things.

They do disappear after 5 minutes or so.

A Frame Shift Wake Scanner module is NOT required for the use of low-power FSD wakes. (FSD = Frame Shift Drive)

High-Power wakes can be scanned using the FSD scanner module to follow a online criminal or NPC to another system. (Hyper-Space)

You can also scan friends high-power wakes, but you can simply ask them where they went in that case.

Here are the steps and a short tutorial video using a USS that my wing-man entered.

1. Get near your friend in super-cruise, not to close or you may pass him.

2. After your friend disengages for a mission, USS, interdiction, or any other reason, use your target button (default "T" key) to target his low-power wake.

3. Approach the wake using the recommended (blue) throttle setting.

4. Once close enough (under 1MM a.k.a. 1000KM) you will see a "Safe Disengage Ready" message.

5. Use your FSD button (default "j" key) to disengage on your friends lower-power wake.

6. Now assist each other and change the galaxy together!


These work for me, in both online and private group mode.

This assumes the matchamking server will put you and your friend(s) in the same instance, which apparently does not work in private groups.

It works fine for me in online and private. Make support tickets accordingly.
 
Sometimes bugs do occur, but support tickets will need to be made in those instances.

It happens fairly often. 2 players might end up in the same instance but they might not see the AI ship. So on top of no bounty splitting , there may be no chance to help that friend either.

This might explain why me and my friend never found eachother, neither in normal space or supercruise. never found his FSD wake or anything either.
How do I make sure me and my friend is in the same instance (in private group)?

As long as you're both in the same mode, the server should do the rest.
 
My friends and I did some experimentation with this earlier today. My observations so far are that there is some odd behavior when when the second and third players drop into the instance. First occasion was an interdiction of an NPC Python. I interdicted it and began the engagement. A minute or so later, a friend dropped in and began his engagement against the NPC too. We could see each other attacking the same AI and thought that this was a relatively poorly understood cooperative multiplayer mechanic that worked adequately. That thought lasted until I collided with the Python. My experience at that point was that I had destroyed the Python and was given notification that I had a bounty to pick up next time I landed. My friend's experience was different. He said that he saw the Python on 6%, at which point it departed via hyperspace jump.

Second engagement was on a Cobra. We all saw the "same" Cobra, had the same NPC pilot flying it, but we all saw that it had different experience levels. For me it was deadly, for another it was novice and for the third it was harmless. We'd all entered frame shift a few seconds apart. Possible that the first player spawned them, but we'd all had different copies of the same NPC thanks to a bit of latency.

Third one, I engaged an NPC and my two friends dropped in on my wake. They could not see the NPC I was fighting, but could see me shooting.

Final experiment for the night was a bit like the second. Same ship type, same NPC name, different skill levels indicated. Interestingly enough, while I was engaging a dangerous-level NPC, my friend was engaging the same NPC who was noted as being harmless. Despite the harmless tag, he was actually quite highly skilled. Given that we've all spent a few days engaging much larger ships of varied ability, I found this slightly odd. Purely anecdotal, but I wonder what some of you guys think.
