How to upgrade your ship past a certain point?

So I have a MkIII Cobra with A3-4 rated everything.
How can I find A5-? rated modules, what's the secret?

I've also just bought an ASP but finding it difficult to upgrade at all, trying to ballance jump distance with modules is difficult.
With A rated modules I get a jump distance of 7?

Firstly your ship has limited space and as such has internal compartments that can only take up to a certain rating module - for the Cobra MkIII the largest module the ship can take is a 4. It cannot have 5+ fitted to it.

Secondly with regards to the ASP you need to think about Mass. D rated modules have the lowest Mass, using those will extend your jump range as range is tied to mass. Check out here for a base ASP explorer build with an unladed range of 34LY.

A class doesn't necessarily mean the best. Use ED Shipyard to help you plan your configurations, it's a very handy tool.

Have a look at EDShipyard - you'll be able to see the maximum size of modules that will fit in each ship and can play around with configurations.

If you fit an FSD of any class other than the maximum possible you'll get a rubbish jump range. It does warn you to that effect when you buy one. ;)

It sounds like you are fitting the wrong modules. The letters are the quality, the number is the size. If your ship has a class 5 FSD and you put a class 3 on it even if its more expensive and has a higher letter you will lose jump distance.

You need to have the right size module number for the ship then upgrade to a higher quality letter like A.

The Cobra does not have any A5 slots, so you probably have it fully upgraded. Check the EDyard as the recommended on the thread earlier. Also, look at the slot descriptions in game, those will tell you what is the max size stuff you can equip.

The Asp needs a class A, size 5 FSD for maximum jump range. They cost 5.3m cr each but not every station sells them. I know LHS 2936 sells them as I bought mine there but if you search for other threads about fitting out an Asp, you'll find people mentioning other stations that do too. You'll probably need a class D, size 5 as a minimum just to start using it.
