How well will my laptop run VR?

I have an MSI GS43VR laptop. i7 7700HQ, GTX 1060 6GB, 16GB DDR4 RAM, and a 1 TB NVMe SSD. It runs Elite: Dangerous at 4K on my 40" Samsung TV great. I forget my graphics settings but they're probably all mid-high with supersampling/antialiasing disabled. I don't know my frame rate but I never notice any hitches or anything.

The laptop claims to be VR-ready. Any idea as to how well it would actually run this game with a Rift or Vive?

Based on your hardware it should do fine, but be prepared for a big hit compared to the clarity of 4K. Immersion for clarity is the trade-off.

Cool. I figured VR would be easier than 4K.

Now if I could stop ping-ponging my two vehicles to the mechanic long enough to save up for a VR headset...

No. I understand your thinking, but VR has proven to be a bigger load than 4K. But all is relative of course. If you're looking for rock solid 90 fps in a HAZ res most desktop PC's will struggle. Bumping settings will be at your own risk. And this is ignoring the drop in clarity.

My advice would be to try before you buy. I had a Vive and was initially awestruck. But I ended up selling it again for a monitor and a EDTracker headtracker while I wait for next generation VR. Resolution and Field of View need to be higher and prices lower in my opinion.

But the Rift is on sale as we speak. Half price of the Vive. Differences between the two are negligible:
