Hardware & Technical How well would a 2-way SLI 960 build work with ED? And how big a PSU does such a build need?

Zip forward to 3:45. for the dual card report.

Zip to 5:50 for recommendations for a dual card set up.

The conclusions are...meah.

I have tried SLI 960s in the past, at 3440x1440 resolution. Verdict: unusable. I don't know if it was the lack of ram, but basically there were weird LONG periods of slowness when things got busy. You might get away with it at lower resolutions, or if both cards are 4GB models, but even then, you're better off looking for a single faster card. I just picked up a temporary use card: a new EVGA SC ACX 2.0 970 for £220 and they have £20 cashback on that bringing the effective cost to £200. Given a new 960 starts around £140, I think it is worth looking at the 970, or AMD 480, or give it a couple of weeks for the 1060.

If you go ahead with SLI 960's, they're not very power hungry and assuming you don't have an insane OC CPU or too many accessories, a decent quality 500W should be plenty.

The simple answer is no, hence why it has been dropped from the 1060.

Ah more qualified answer would be that you would be lucky to see a 10% increase in overall performance over a 960 on its own. Plus it still won't be able to play games in much more than 1080p even in dual SLI configuration and will still be limited to the memory of just one card.

Hold on a little longer old boy, the 1060 is around the corner at not much more money than a 960 is at the moment. And that will out do a 980, the 960's in SLI won't even reach 970 performance.

nvidia have said the 1060 will start from £239, which is obviously quite a bit more than the 960 starting around £140 new. Of course, if you find a used one that might swing things.

That is about the same price point where the 960 dropped at it's launch. And it is still 2/3 the price of the GTX 980, or less...

As ever thanks for all your feedback guys. I've been looking into this all day.

I've come to the conclusion that the 1060, not SLI 960's, represents the best upgrade for me, so I'm going to save up for one of those. A little more cost... But I get more out of it.

In all my years of pc building (and there are a lot) I have never seen the need, nor the expense for gaming rigs to require linked video cards.

My current build spec is starting to get a little long in the tooth (i7 Devils Canyon, MSI Gaming 7 mobo and 16GB DDR3 HyperX RAM) but still pushes ED, full res, smooth as silk on a single MSI Nvidia 970 - even new games like Warhammer Total War quite happily play at max settings.

My advice - save your money and invest in a better board/cpu/memory
