I don't think anyone can really tell you if its worth it, as this really comes down to what you want and what value you hold on things. To get into VR and do it right, it will be expensive, but for myself, VR is far more than some peripheral that you can add to your PC, its a whole new way of experiencing games, and its definitely not going to be a fad. IMO VR will only work with certain types of games, like some 3rd person ones, but its mainly gonna be the best for any cockpit games, so if you are really into Elite and/or other cockpit games, then VR will most likely be for you. Not everyone loves it atm, but this is mainly due to the low res, and unable to see your controls or keyboard, but the low res will be fixed in time, and is already not bad in the DK2 if you can run with high resolution and super sampling, the consumer versions will be better.

When someone asks me what its like when they find out I have a VR setup, the best way to describe it is, when I was a kid and teen, I went to Disney World often and also to other various amusement parks like Bush Gardens, Universal Studios and many more, went on all the top rides and had an awesome time, yet none of these stack up to the experiences you can get in a good VR game imo. I look at it like I have a Grade A amusement park sitting in the corner of my room.

I mostly agree with previous poster about its best experience in cockpit games. I have never had so good feeling about any other type of game. Elite is probably the best optimized thing I have ever seen in VR till now.

Talking about ED, it adds whole new dimension to this game and not just literally. On a monitor, you can never really see, how big your ship is, how big the stations really are and you will probably be surprised when you see them in VR. When you look around, it feels so natural, its really immersive.

I am surely going for CV1 when it comes out, got DK2 since its release and I am still convinced about it, even if its only for ED.

The VR experience in ED is awesome and I could not imagine playing it without it. Yes the resolution isn't nearly as good as a monitor but what you lose in the eye candy you more than gain in the sense of immersion.

Sometimes the immersion goes a little too far and I experience these sorts of issues.

1. I get travel sick when in the SRV and going over very variable terrain.
2. When I'm driving my car (in real life) and look left or right, for a nanosecond my brain doesn't understand why I don't see holographic screens. Perhaps I play it too much! lol

What you will need though is a very capable rig as it needs to maintain at least 75 frame per second. Now ED is not currently VR optimised so even with the greatest of rigs this will be impossible in all circumstances but you should be able to get close.

thanx for your reply's guys :)
consumer version's should be released early 2016. I cant wait to get one. I like some other games, tried many only found 2 worth sticking with so far. ED on PC. S/S ON PC/PS3. I will only get VR for this game.. or future proofing:)

K, lets see, i Have 3 42" full hd tv's running at 5860x1080, I also have a decent 1080p projector on a 105" screen and i have a high end rig to run it all at locked max framerate, And still only ever use the rift for elite, enough said

I had 3 Asus 4K Monitors, TrackIR, Hotas Warthog and a stonking 7.1 Surround Sound System. Since shifting to the DK2, I sold two of my 4K monitors, my sound system, traded them in for a 7.1 headphones. The experience is in a league of its very own, despite the poor resolution, the feeling, the immersion is incredible. You are truly a Pilot in your very own ship. I will never ever look back! Never!

Even bought another one just in case something broke on my number 1 DK2.

For me the nausea went away when I followed steps 5 and 7 here and didn't use DSR: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=121355

Basically, I'm not getting framerate drops now. ctrl+f shows your fps in game

If you can afford it, it is totally worth it. Ive spent quit a bit of money on my VR setup and it was worth every penny. The lower resolution takes getting used to but level of immersion and presence makes up for it and then some. Its one of those things you just can't explain, you have to try it.

Pretty much the same from my experience. I used to use 3 24" 3d screens in 3dvision surround, a Warthog and TrackIR. Never played the game on that setup again after receiving my DK2 in August 2014. I still prefer speakers though.

Except for strategy games I haven't played anything else since then and I'd say it's because of the VR experience. At around 1900 hours, I have done most things that can be done in the game repeatedly, yet I still log in on almost daily basis to transform my room into a spaceship.

Well, as a 40-something year old gamer, here is my observation...

  1. I get nauseous playing first-person games after 30 minutes - Call of Duty, etc.... even Minecraft. For some reason, I do not have any problem playing ED with the Monitor or the RIFT :)
  2. I bought a RIFT and was blown away. You really can't describe it unless you try it. However my original PC struggled to handle it - the GPU takes a beating. No feeling of nausea unless FPS dropped really low
  3. After about 6 months of limping along, I went and built myself a custom gaming-rig just to play ED with the RIFT. Whole thing cost nearly $4K. Now it runs amazing! No feeling sick, although there is the odd judder now and then. For me, Horizons works great and I don't have a problem driving around
  4. The game can be flaky at times - Oculus Run-Time version, Windows OS, GPU Driver, etc. all seem to have to work together and things can go wrong fairly quickly with new updates. But after a year I have never been "down" for more than an hour
  5. Just for fun, I tried a few other games on the new PC with the Rift, just to see how then compare:

  • Star Citizen - got the Rift working, but head-track would not work properly. Gave up after about an hour of messing around
  • War Thunder - works great, but it does just not feel as immersive as ED. For some reason RIFT vs. Monitor feels similar :(
  • iRacing - This was an odd one. Loved the graphics, but I literally wanted to throw-up after no more than 5 minutes :( I just could not play it without feeling sick almost immediately. No idea why... the thought of a car-racing game appealed, but the vomit-inducing effect was too much
So, overall, I would recommend the RIFT. But you really need to see what suits you and what doesn't. Obviously money is a factor - the Rift is expensive and may lead you to even more expenses later ;) But it literally is like being in space, flying a star-ship, with some amazing scenery. You can't really put a price on that :D

I tried an occulust rift at a friends house. I was so excited to finally be able to test it, the creater was the disappointment. I got really fast dizzy and felt like vomiting. So did my friends. It may be cool for some games, but I don't see it working on fast paced ego shooters. Maybe future versions will be better, lets see! :)

I didn't think it would be good in the likes of cod. but in ED I was thinking that it would be good. still cant wait for one. this 50yr old gamer has to wait for the next gen gpu first. I have heard my 660s aren't up to the job.

38 year old gamer singing in.

Here are just a couple of quotes from my previous posts regarding topics like this .....

Alien Isolation... holy ..... ! Wow! Your "manhood" will be in question on this one. Awesome VR experience with gorgeous graphics and sound ( always use headphones when doing VR ) !! I am a huge fan of the Alien movies and I have to admit, to finally be able to walk around the Nostromo and LV-426 crash site ( and other places ) well.... Simply put, a dream come true!

My first experience in the Rift is pretty much similar to the rest of you guys.... Pure amazement! Just sat there looking in awe, it really is an amazing experience.

Im an old school gamer, been active in "the scene" as far back as I can remember, atari spectrum amigas commodore , yeah.. I even tried the old VFX1 back in the 90s along with Digital Image Design EF2000. Was blown away back then. Fast forward 20 years and I can finally put on a VR headset. Putting on the Rift and parking my ship in orbit around a star or planet is like a dream come true. How about walking around the sister ship of the Nostromo from the Alien movie, or flying the sukhoi su-27 up into the clouds and and and... Well, you know what I mean.

Cant wait to get my hands on the Consumer Version of Oculus Rift.

VR is indeed awesome. I've owned my DK2 for just over a year and am still thrilled to play on it daily. the one thing i dont understand is why everyone keeps saying headphones over 5.1, 7.1 HT audio setups. immersion doesnt come from 2 little speakers strapped to your head.

Some would say that you can actually hear "more" with two little speakers strapped to your head, especially with the DK2.

I'd completely disagree. "Feeling" is more important to me, so I have an old bass combo I crank up and use when I know the neighbours are away :D

The feeling you get when the air is pushed out your lungs is quite something.

Hi. I'm just going to copy/paste a post I put up on reddit a few weeks ago. This is how i'm finding VR:

On December 18th 2014, I broke up with my girlfriend. It was a pretty nasty breakup, we had been together for quite awhile. That same night I read an article about how amazing Elite: Dangerous was the the Oculus Rift DK2. I had never heard of E:D but had been anticipating Star Citizen quite a bit.

on December 20 2014, I found an Oculus Rift DK2 for sale on craigstlist from a guy 2 blocks from my house. So i went ahead and bought E:D as well. I was immediately blown away by the experience, also with a few racing games that were DK2 compatible.

I felt the need for a cockpit for E:D and the racing games so I put this together (I posted this a few weeks ago):

http://imgur.com/qVG5GYG

-The seat is motorized from a 90's Oldsmobile I got on craigstlist for 20$. I spliced in a 12V adapter to make it fully adjustable. -X55 Rhino for E:D -Logitech G27 for Project Cars Buttkicker Simulation kit mounted underneath the seat. -Oculus DK2

I've been playing Elite for hundreds of hours over the last 12 months, taking a break here and there, and it's been an absolutely AMAZING experience and the best i've ever had in my 30 years of gaming.

Then FD announced Horizons, and I thought, wouldn't it be cool if I could use the G27 to drive the SRV around? I'm already set up for it! then adjust the seat back for HOTAS control once back in my ship?

Well, I couldn't resist pre-ordering the Horizons beta to try it out..... and OMFG. once mapped correctly, it controls PERFECTLY with the steering wheel / pedals. the pedals are mapped as forward acceleration, reverse acceleration, and brake. I mapped all the other buttons on the wheel / shifter for everything else (thrusters, lights, etc...)

The BEST part of driving the SRV is that when i switch to turret mode, I can still drive around using wheel/pedals, but the joystick is now mapped to turret control, so i can drive one handed and turret simultaneously, and it's fantastic! i'm getting very good! I have hopes that they could add Force Feedback, but the buttkicker helps with that a bit.

The experience of now flying in space in my cockpit with my HOTAS, landing on a planet, deploying the SRV and driving around using the wheel is absolutely fantastic. I'm in awe every single time. I'd be lying if I said i didn't shed a few tears of amazement.

Horizons launch has now got me more excited for it than Star Wars: The Force Awakens. and i'm a HUGE Star Wars fan.

Everything just WORKS. Thank you FD.

if anyone has any questions about any of this, ask away!

my PC specs:
I7 950 @ 4Ghz 6GB RAM GTX 980 Windows 7 Oculus SDK 0.5 Nvidia drivers: 359.06

I knew VR was the way to go long before Oculus rift. Back when I purchased an IO-Systems PC3d with no head-tracking and awful image quality temperature sensitive LCD. It gave a glimpse of the future. I had no intention of purchasing Oculus DK2 because I was going to wait until CV1 launch but I ended up purchasing my friend's DK2 (he wanted to sell it to raise the money for CV1 when it launches). I've been using the DK2 for about 3 months now and only play PC games with it. I have no interest in returning to non-VR.

Last night I was flying low over a rocky planet... In the cockpit with everything life-size and 3d. It doesn't have 4k res but what you lose in pixel res is more than made up for by the experience of being in the game world.

Conventional gaming consists of staring at a tiny, flat fixed display. Everything is in miniature. VR makes everything life-size. It feels real. Combat is amazing because you can look around for the target as he goes beyond the normal frontal region.

I had a conversation online with a scientist last year about VR. He told me he'd tried many professional VR systems and pixel resolution wasn't the most important thing. He said tracking was far more important.

You wouldn't want to buy a DK2 at this point but I would certainly recommend Oculus CV1 or HTC Vive.

For Elite you will also need that HOTAS system with VR.

VR makes even old game come to life. I've been playing through Half Life 2 and really seeing it properly for the first time thanks to VR.

This is incorrect. VR works very well for fast shooters and Team Fortress 2 is the proof.

If you suffer from sickness then maybe VR isn't for you. I do know of people who get themselves used to it though by playing a bit longer each day until they no longer have the issue.

I never have motion sickness with VR. Never have and never will.

Best 2hrs yet ran perfect on Win 10, 980, 0.8

Edit: Another 3 hrs of perfect buttery smooth play except for a couple of hmd resets. It even looks great tonight I noticed my reshade initilizing when I open the game it shows it starting in the top left corner and wow what a difference that makes. That was the best 5 hrs I have ever had on this a little sea sick though very uneven planet looks like the grand canyon. Picked up 53 pieces of material and ran 2 decent missions
