How's anyone suppose to search panels when they're completely covered by rock?

So I got a mission to search a crashed ship for Memory Modules, but every part of this ship is completely covered by rock. What? Then there is also materials that you can't even get to that are inside the ship? What is going on here?

Had similar issues where panels would just fail to fall off and keep blocking the item I needed to pickup.
