HP question for Keelback mining build

So I'm gonna buy a Keelback for mining.

I'm definitely gonna have an SLF bay.

But the Keelback comes with 2 small and 2 medium hard points.

So the question is, should I devote both medium hardpoints for mining lasers? Or the two small?

I want this miner to have some teeth also.

So what's your suggestion for my hard point loadout? I was thinking I'd do 1 medium and 1 small mining lasers.

Thoughts?

Strictly for mining, 2 medium mining lasers will not fire long with the class 3 distributor. It can only handle 1 med without engineering, can almost handle 1 med, 1 small with engineering.

I tried this before passenger missions dropped and it sucked. Keelback doesn't have enuf slots for mining and a SLF. You need one bay for cargo. You need at least a C3 refinery, prospector limpet controller and 4 collector limpets or you will hate life. You're going to have to make sacrifices if you want the SLF.

Really? I'd love to try mining but the SLF would be more fun. What's your recommendation then?

So, either run a C2 shield generator, C3 refinery and SLF, or run a C3 refinery, C3 shield generator and ditch the SLF.

My mining Clipper has only a A2 refinery and it does just fine.
The Keelback doesn't need more than one medium mining laser. As Drownerfood says, it doesn't have the distributor power for more. leaving room for a class-4 shield and a class 3 collector. So, this Keelback would be a passable mining ship.

Mining is always limited by you ability to collect - 1 medium mining laser = 6 collectors, so if it were me I'd not go past 2 small mining lasers.

That's all you need to know about mining in a Keelback.

I was using a Keelback as a mining testbed. I bolted mining lasers to ALL the hardpoints and, IIRC, 2 medium lasers drained the capacitor, 1 medium and 2 small did the same and so did 1 medium and 1 small.
The only combination I could keep running constantly was a pair of small mining lasers.

If you're going mining in a Keelback with an SLF, that isn't going to leave you with room for both prospector and collector limpet controllers.
I can't recall if it could work if you didn't bother with a prospector controller but that's kinda tying one hand behind your back.

I don't think it's really worth trying to build a mining ship with more than rudimentary defences.
All you need is something to deter an attacker while you get out of the asteroid field and jump away.

I managed to fight off things like Sidewinders and Adders in my Keelback, armed with a pair of medium beam lasers, but if anything bigger came after me I think I'd prefer to just run away rather than try and fight it in an SLF.

That's probably about the best you will do with a SLF. 6 bins still mean a lot of refinery babysitting though.

Yeah, if you just mine at random ring locations, you don't really need any (stay away from actual RES's). I did however, get interdicted by a NPC federal gunship and blown up once in my A rated (non engineered) AspX mining ship, but I don't think a SLF would have really helped in that situation.

Thank you all for the informative replies. I haven't tried SLF bays yet so I was curious if it would be beneficial.

On a side note, how do I give rep?
