HP Reverb and Steam VR or Direct Client

Looking to get the Reverb to replace my Rift. Currently i launch ED through the direct client. If i was to install a Reverb can i still use the direct client or will i have to install ED on steam?

This is probably a stupid question.

I have not found a way to use the Reverb without having steam vr running..
I think it's essential, but would like to be proved wrong.

The only reason I had steam installed at all was for Planet Zoo.

As far as I can tell (I'm also new to this; only bought my HP Mixed Reality set on Saturday, because John Lewis were throwing the stock out at a mere £179) it's not possible to avoid the mess of loading WMR itself, then SteamVR, then finally Elite. It's a good job I've got 16GB of memory. Would love to know if there's an alternative, as I'm sure I could get better performance if I knew how to turn off unnecessary stuff.

You do not need to own Elite on steam, you do need to have Steam VR and windows mixed reality installed.
If you launch Elite from FDs launcher, Steam VR and WMR should start automatically, I've done this for the last 18 months.
(as Iain L data you can start them manually but it's not necessary, there is a setting somewhere in steam/wmr to auto launch VR when it's asked for)

Edit: and use EDProfiler, (thread VR sub here), it's great

Thanks for confirming I can go straight to the launcher. It's still loading everything in the background, but at least it's a few fewer clicks.

One remark here: occasionally, when I start ED, it will run in 60 FPS mode (nope, Windows settings is set to 90 FPS). Quit WMR (and ED), then start again and it will run in 90 FPS mode.
Still better than the Rift CV1 which would require a unlog/relog cycle.
