HP Reverb G2 7-14 Warranty Fix for AMD Chipset Motherboards

I've got one of the AMD motherboards (x570), with USB ports that can't hold a stable connection for the Reverb G2 headset. AMD tried to fix affected motherboard chipsets (x570, x590 and more), but have been unable to do so. HP themselves picked up the problem, and have made a new cable that can work around the problem, a quick call to HP support and they are sending me the new cable under warranty. Obviously I can't confirm first hand that this works yet, but the reddit thread I got the info from seems very positive.

I'm not sure what the policy is for headsets that aren't under warranty any more, as technically this isn't the fault of HP, there's some talk about still being able to get a cable, but I'm not sure on details.

Side note, the first 30 seconds of conversation went like this. I think HP are a bit bitter towards AMD about this one.

Me: "Hi, I have the Reverb G2 and an x570 chipset"
Agent: "Faaantastic. That's not a good combination"

TL;DR - If you have a Reverb G2 and an AMD motherboard with a dodgy chipset, give HP a call and ask for the new cable.

P.S. Apologies if this has already been posted elsewhere, I did a search but couldn't find it. Feel free to point it out if I missed it, and I'll be sure to feel appropriately ashamed.

FYI
I have an Asus ROG Strix X570-F motherboard (with latest Asus BIOS update) with an HP G2 with old/original cable and running no problem.
However I am using the USB port on my AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT graphics card, which may be why.
I did have a seperate USB 3.2 card which also worked, but now just use the USB on my GPU

Yeah one of the workarounds for the problem was to plug it into the graphics card USB port. Sadly newer graphics cards have done away with USB ports, so that's not an option for me with my RTX 3070.

I got the new cable from HP when they first made them available and it works great. My motherboard is the Asus ROG Strix X570-E and none of the USB ports work with the Reverb G2.
It doesn't make much difference in ED though as I haven't played it since they released Odyssey without full VR support. That flat screen for the on foot play is someone's idea of a sick joke.

edit: HP admitted they never did enough testing before release. I wouldn't put all the blame (if any) on AMD.

In this instance I'm happy to blame AMD, or at least Asus, as the USB ports on my PC don't put out enough power to charge my phone in a reasonable time, and from what the guy on the phone said AMD admitted there was a problem but couldn't fix it. HP obviously didn't do enough testing, but still the issue shouldn't have existed if AMD had done their job.

You didn't say which motherboard you have. Mine has only got USB 3.2 gen 2 ports (the red ones). It seems that if your board had 3.1 ports (blue) you could get the G2 working. Obviously I couldn't test that so I bought a PCIe board with USB-C and that solved the problem. I still got the new cable though because I wanted the headset to work the way it was supposed to. Surprised when they asked for the old cable back. The new cable having a power switch is what should have been made in the first place. HP telling owners to unplug the headset when not being used was laughable. I'm not bothered whose fault it was but they worked together to sort out a problem that should never have happened.

Now if only FDev could get VR fully working in Odyssey. I'm not holding my breath though and may end up selling the G2 because ED is the only game I want it for.

My HP Omen 17 laptop, i9 - 10885H, 32Gb, NV RTX2080 Super 8Gb from Hewlett Packard with its USB ports works perfectly with the HP Reverb G2 helmet and even with the old version of the cable.

New cable arrived in less than 24 hours. Can confirm it fixed my issues, and the headset now works via the rear USB-C port that doesn't even have enough power to charge my phone in less than 6 hours.

I've got a B550M board, and recently installed a 6700xt GPU, then all hell broke loose in VR. crashing, blue screens, black screens, d up windows symbols, the lot.
I honestly thought it had broken, then found out about the cable thing.
Called them. (once I eventually found my way out of the HP support loop)
had a new cable within a few days, and it's now perfect. dead solid.
My reverb is waaaay out of warrentee, and bought from Germany, but that wasn't even an issue.
They just wanted the serial no. from the headset, and an address to post it to.
I guess maybe they're crossing out S.N.s as they go, to avoid fraud?
I had to photograph the S.N. and zoom in, as it's written for ants, but they were most helpful, and the solution is perfect.

word on the street is that it had to do with weak signal and distance to controller chip from port/device. new better quality cable can improve things... also pcie expansion cards or other cards like gpus with usb controllers like mentioned above or different motherboard layouts can impact things as that will change where the controller chip is in relation to the port.

intel has similar issues in some boards, but most intel boards have separate controllers very close to the port connectors on the motherboard and so dont suffer the issue to nearly the same impact.

but the amd thing was in addition to a simultaneous usb issue that impacted things on a wider scale. So you'll want to make sure you have the latest AGESA (via bios update). In some cases, the bios update and picking the "right" port could resolve your problems without a new cable.

this issue shouldn't be confused with any issues related to delivering power to the device. that's a different problem and almost definitely related to the motherboard manufacturer rather than the company designing the chipset or cpu. (unless it's related to negotiating changing voltage from standard 5v)

Yeah I figured it wasn't to do with power, as such, it's to do with how clean the signal is, and in the new cable there is what amounts to a USB hub. I just generally have power issues with the USB on my desktop computer though so I wouldn't rule out it being a contributing factor. It's not as bad as my previous system where USB ports would just drop out completely randomly, or the one before that where something plugged into the USB port would prevent the system from even beginning the POST. I'm just generally cursed where it comes to USB devices.

I was going to go for a different manufacturer this time, as I've typically gone Asus, but someone in a Facebook group offered to send me a spare, new, Asus X570-F Gaming motherboard they had, and I don't make enough money to refuse a free £220 motherboard 😂

Ah that's good, the message from HP was that they were only doing it under warranty, but I guess they are being more flexible. The VR market is getting competitive though, and is still quite niche, so it makes sense to not alienate people over a cable.

Just ordered my replacement cable from HP Support.
Even though my headset works on my main PC because I use the USB port on my Radeon GPU, when I checked with my second PC (which also has an X570 MB but no USB on the GPU so I had to use the USB on the MB), the headset didn't work, so I ordered a replacement, no problems with HP they just wanted the S/N of the headset.

New cable arrived 3 days later and Headset definately now works using USB port on X570 motherboard.
