HP reverb only through Steam launcher?

From the discussion so far around the HP reverb, I gathered that you are supposed to run ED through Steam VR for that headset - which would be completely new to me. Right now, I'm running the Oculus Rift (CV) and start ED from the Frontier launcher while having Oculus Home active in the background. So, the question is, is something similar possible with the reverb or do I absolutely have to use Steam VR? In the latter case, is Steam VR independent from the general Steam app, or would this in the end make it necessary for me to start ED through the Steam launcher?
Shouldn't be a legal problem - I have ED for long enough that I can make use of both licenses - but I've set up ED to work with two CMDRs through two copies of the ED launcher, and would hate to lose that option because I'd have to switch to Steam. Plus, Steam adds another layer of unreliability to the whole house of cards.

So, any experience/suggestions, perhaps also from users of other WMDs?

For the reverb, I continue to start via the Frontier launcher, and SteamVR is started automatically.

ED is designed to work with Oculus and/or steamvr software to display the VR visuals. It is not designed to work directly with windows vr through the windows mixed reality portal, so steam have an app to allow wmr to interface with steamvr its called 'windows mixed reality portal for Steamvr' and is free to download from the steam store (you obviously need to have a steam account). Before running the Frontier ED launcher you run steamvr and then the 'windows mixed reality for steamvr' app. When you launch ED it should then display in the reverb headset. You need a beefy GPU and CPU for the Reverb to run Elite and to get the best clarity - I lowered the refresh rate down from 90Hz to 60Hz in the windows settings on my PC. In the end I had to return the Reverb - it not having a physical IPD adjustment was the deal breaker for me, my IPD is 59 and the native IPD of the reverb is set at 64. Software IPD adjustment does not work - it just alters overlap of each eye panel video display to affect depth perception. You don't have to use any steam launcher, you can launch using the Frontier launcher and you can still use your two copies of the ED launcher to run whichever copy of ED you want to use, just as you did for the Oculus. This .pdf document from HP should help you understand about wmr and steamvr https://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetPDF.aspx/4AA7-5433ENW.pdf

Software IPD is working well for me on the Reverb so I'm afraid I must disagree. All my previous headsets were manual and I wouldn't call them better.

I'm envious it works for you. Its o.k if your IPD is closer to the static IPD of the Reverb, mine is really low and I found I had to 'skew' the mask (hard to explain) to get my pupils to line up with the Reverb lenses - the very small sweet spot didn't help. I just got an Index and the manual IPD is great for me, set to 59 and I have no problems, just like my CV1 was. I really liked the Reverb - great visuals, no screen door (unless you really, really looked hard), great colour reproduction, no god rays or glare. If only the same video panels were used in the Index.. sigh..
