It apparently tracks 38 different points on your lower face so you’ll have more expressive avatars - but possibly with a cold, dead stare on the top half with the occasional blink 😁 Perhaps software can use your actual half expression to guess the other half? Bit like how current social things in VR guess lip-synch from what you say.

Combined with eye-tracking then you could get the real deal, but that’s a future thing - I saw a short video that had a person’s face accurately mapped then animated using eye-tracking & lower face tracking and it was spookily realistic. Sounds like R&D on the next few Quest headsets are aiming for something similar.

If HTC bothered to get the basics right, i.e. spend money on a display that isn't benchmarked against a 1970s television rather than developing all the peripheral boiler plate tech then maybe their VR division wouldn't be following the rest of the company down the toilet. Going from my Vive to my Vive Pro, they were going in all the right directions and then just stopped bothering with the display, tiny increments only. I don't know who's paying for this stuff but looking at their profitability and market share ( market cap down 98% in ten years, -ve EPS even before the pandemic ) I wouldn't get excited about anything from them, they don't have the R&D budget.
