HTC ships winthin 2-3 day from order; Cancel Oculus?

This thread is just thought bubbles frothing about, with floating bits of frustration.

My Oculus order is still estimated for 7/4-7/14 (I preordered on January 8th).

With the news that the HTC Vive is now shipping 2-3 days after making an order, it is mighty tempting to cancel one and get the other.

My hesitation at this point is that I prefer a lighter HMD with as few cables as possible. Plus, not having to deal with putting on/taking off a separate piece of hardware (headset) is very appealing to me. FYI, room scale is not very appealing to me (also, I have no room at all for it).

So, I guess I'll stick with my preorder. However, Oculus is trying my patience....at least today it is.

Just cancel the order and buy a Rift off Gumtree/Craigslist - plenty of em.

I bought mine for 900 as soon as they got in the country, you can get them for 600-700 now.

Frak that waiting nonsense, Rift is worth every penny dude...

I have both and I would tend to agree with HeavyGroovez.

The Vive is a great experience in VR with E:D, but I would say that it is only a relatively moderate step up from the DK2. Nothing earth-shattering really at the moment largely due to the bugs that FD and HTC need to work out (rendering optimizations and resolution primarily).

The Rift is an out-of-the-box, no waiting for patches awesome experience.

If you can find one locally, grab a Rift.

If you can't find a Rift locally, but have the patience to wait it out until July, wait for the Rift.

If you just can't wait and can live with crappy resolution (for the moment) and poor optimization, but want the HMD for other games/apps, then grab a Vive.

I love 'em both, but for different reasons.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll definitely have a look locally. I've checked the usuals (ebay, amazon, etc.) and come up with a bunch of high priced ones still.

I have my DK2 still and use it very often, especially in ED. I'm ready for the step up. Only other thing dissuading me is the lens flaring, but I'm trying to be positive that it won't be too bad an issue.

My hope was/is Oculus will get their shift together and get orders out faster. Especially now that HTC is outdoing them. More importantly (to me), is some family are coming to visit in a few weeks and I was hoping to show them the CV1, but the DK2 will do fine for them to see what VR is like.

Thanks again!

I'm a vive-only user. If I had money, I'd be investigating an OR for E: D. But I don't. So I suffer in the hope that E: D and SteamVR/Valve come up with a fix.

But as I have the space for room scale, which is social in a way that I remember consoles like the Sega MegaDrive being (it's MY shot now!), I'd opt for the vive and just suffer E: D on it until it's fixed.

Life is too short for suffering with the Vive support! Vive la Rift! (see what I did there?)

Oculus is about 3 weeks ahead of current estimates. You just might get a notification next week.
Depends on which one you want.

Not for me (EU location), unfortunately. I am already in my estimated time period and still haven't gotten a notification. :(
Which is sad, as I wanted to demonstrat the Rift to my parents and we have planned the visit accordingly. It would really be a shame, if the HMD wouldn't arrive in time.

You should open a ticket with Oculus.
I follow the North American shipping posts on reddit daily. I shouldn,t think we should jump the line if you ordered earlier. I would be all over them.

Have both, and I'd say once the visual bugs are fixed the Vive is the one to have.. The Oculus is just horrible build quality compared to the Vive. The lack of adjustment options, constant light coming in around nose, etc. Just make it a pain. I wouldn't exactly call it a bug free experience currently either. After playing ED earlier today for 15 minutes, I had a windows warning about low memory and then ED froze up in the oculus display (still was showing on the pc).. This was the second issue I had of the day. Decided to pull out the Vive and played for several hours without one freeze/crash. I'm probably going to return the rift because ED is the ONLY reason I would keep it around, and I'll never use the thing again after the vive w/ ED issues are fixed.

Running i7-6700k w/ GTX 1080 Founders edition.

Can I have what you are smoking? Most stupid fanboi comment ever. I know that you are just trying to justify your purchase of the Vive ... that is fine, but stick to the truth. Yes, I have the Vive too - overall the Rift wins the quality game (software, hardware, support) HANDS DOWN !

Not meaning to cause a rift here (see what I did) but as E: D is not the only game I play in VR and as I have the space, life is too short for suffering VR with an X-box controller. I'm sure the touch will be fine and dandy when it appears but....

You should take a bit of your own medicine I think. Unless I've missed some humour intended in your posts, which is possible, "Hands down" is funny, because, you know... like, when you play the Rift, your hands are always down, because there are no controllers tracking hand movement... did I just explain the joke and make it not funny .... damn ....

This just in. Oculus now processing at 4 weeks ahead (July 4 early estimate) on the Canadian specific reddit tracker. They advanced a week in one day.

I've seen varying reports of ppl getting their rift around the original ship date. There are, however, reports of late shipments, other delays, and some ppl getting theirs ahead of the early pre-order crowd.
It's all a jumble of mess, and hard to tell what is actually happening.
I've looked at local ppl selling their new, unopened rifts, but for at least a hundred or more dollars. So, I'm just gonna hang on and hope for the best. My DK2 has lasted this long, I think I can handle a while longer....if not, I'll be under my desk weeping. ;)

I have been following the Canadian shipping thread (which ships from the US) for about 2 months and with very few exceptions it has been orderly. Oculus has only just finished what was ordered on the first day, which was obviously the bulk of pre-orders. The pre-order backlog has been clearlng at an ever increasing rate. Cheer up mate, you have an early date that is a week ahead of me. You could get your notice any day now. If the trend continues, I am hoping to hear next week. Waited this long I won't sweat it now.
