Elite in VR is fantastic. Whether Vive or Rift (I own a Vive myself). So if you like to play Elite a heck of a lot like I do, it may be worthwhile to hop into VR. You will be very fine with a 980Ti video card. I run with a GTX 970 and it works quite well. If you can get $100 off a Vive, then I'd jump on it. But be aware. Once you hop into VR you may find yourself wanting a GTX 1080... I am battling with myself at the moment on this. My wife may kill me if I end up wit the 1080Ti that I am leaning towards. Despite the screams of NO from the bank account.
90% of my gaming is in VR with Elite. Otherwise I've pretty much been underwhelmed by most other VR titles... but that isn't to say they are bad. There are some interesting tech demos, and the games that have come out so far are showing promise for the future. Just don't expect many fully fleshed out game titles... for example you won't see a Witcher 3 type RPG of a large scope for VR. Elite is pretty much the one AAA title, in my opinion, for VR currently. I consider VR an emerging tech.. but I am quite confident adoption is going to skyrocket over the next 5 years.
